1960 to 66 C10 truck prices
 

Hello
I was looking for parts as always for my 1965 Chevy C10 and spending money here and there has anyone noticed that truck prices and parts have skyrocketed lately. I have not seen a decent truck for under 10 grand anymore. I see a lot going for 20 to 25k. I’m not talking. trailer queens but so so trucks. What gives? These are becoming more rare and desirable?
I can remember back in the 80’s when a nice one would pop up every now and then I thought 5k was all the money in the world for these “ugly trucks” and yeah they we not considered the “good trucks”. Where I grew up in Ohio after all they all were just “farm trucks” most I saw were in crappy shape. My how things have change.

I picked up our 1964 (still a project) in 2019. Got it for $3800 with no engine or trans. I saw an article from Hagerty within a year saying that the 60-66 C10s were the fastest appreciating classic car, for several quarters in a row. I'm not sure if they are still at the top, but the secret is out! Personally I think it's a follow on effect from the 68-72 prices that skyrocketed a few years ago. People decided that they couldn't afford the 68-72 that they really wanted, so they started snapping up the previous generation trucks. On the positive side, I got in while the costs were still relatively low, so hopefully I won't be in this truck for more than I can get out of it. Those costs really add up over time!

I bought my truck. Running and driving for $600... granted that was in 1989.

I was looking for a suburban a few years ago and saw some nice ones for $12-20k, at the time I thought that was high, but now, $25k is about as low as you will find them near me if they are daily driveable.

Near me a roller long bed is advertised for $4500, a driver is $10-15k

I bought my truck in 2015 for $4900 running and driving. I drove it for 2 years before I started working on it. I look all the time at trucks online and prices are going crazy. Like you said prices are getting higher and higher on parts too...not original parts, but repops are going up as well. Hard to find a truck with an engine now for $5k...let alone run.

However, it is our passion to save them and get them back on the road.

I eventually want at least one from the 40s, 50s, 60's & maybe 70's...so I guess I better start looking! 1 down 4 to go.

my truck is one year away from being 60 years old. In the 80's they were only 20 years old. How much would you pay for a 20 year old truck. If you bought it for 5,000 40 years ago and can sell it for 20,000 now that is a fairly good return on your investment.

I never thought of old cars or trucks good investments I will never Talley up the huge box of receipts so accumulated over 17 years of ownership. I am married to this car. I should have bought gold coins with that money and had been much further ahead in life. :waah:

The price spike is not limited to classic vehicles. It's everything. You know how people like to say 60 is the new 30 or whatever, I like to say the 50 dollar bill is the new 20.

I just rebuilt the engine in my truck as some might know if you saw my post. I went and picked up a 73 front crossmember the other day for the brakes and such. I told the guy who likes these trucks I thought about selling it and he asked how much I would want. I told him $8000 at the least. It is all original (ok 99% anyway) and has that natural patina. He didn't even flinch at the price. I also lowered it 3 In all around.

Oh man, I HATE it when I throw out a price and they don't flinch. Makes me think that I should have tossed out a higher number from the beginning!

I'm not selling it.. You can't drive money. You use a truck and park it and it will be there the next day. You spend money and it sometimes will be back again at some point.

Wow, do you think the seller of the palm springs truck really thinks 9900 miles are original?? With a non original cluster...smart!

I think that is what gets me...people who don't know vehicles are pricing them if they are a vintage Ferrari...

I use to see some sitting around farms here the last few years and they are gone now. Looked at a few via net or craigs list, market place etc. and ragged out ones were around $4 to $5 k that didn't run .:lol:

I agree; got mine for $2500 - got it just in the nick-of-time.

Can't believe how much they want for any old classic, even motorcycles and scooters. The days of the barn finds are pretty much gone. I imagine there's a few here and there, but they'll want a fortune for them.

I bought this collection 3 years ago for $3000 Canadian. No motor or tranny. The cab was prepared for paint when I got it but I knew it was a reputable shop that did the work. It also came with new inner and outer fenders. The guy took a loss when selling it to me but it had become a money pit for him.

It can be a money pit, unless you have a specific direction; I know I went around a few times, thinking one thing, then shifting gears and going a different way.

I think I could still get what I put into the truck, if I decided to sell. It may take a while, but these trucks have become more popular and they do command a higher price nowadays. But, I’m talking Southern California, I’ll bet in other states, you could find better bargains.

Traded my 65 C10 burb for this 66 K10 burb about 6 years ago. Not soon after I was offered $10K as it sat. I could not believe it at the time but seems about right these days. Maybe its worth even more now that it has rebuilt brakes, engine and new tires.

People are pulling beat up, rusted (for Texas) & picked through trucks out of pastures around here & asking $4k or higher for them missing half the parts, no motor or trans.

Hagerty said in an article (and I am paraphrasing here obviously) eventually a given era will hit a peak and then begin to slowly drop as the asking price becomes out of reach for younger buyers. The other part of that equation is, eventually the people with an "emotional connection" to that same given era begin to age out of the hobby and those younger enthusiasts who take their place are looking for a more recent classic, because that is where their connection is. Seems true... Squarebody chevys, Rx7's, Miatas, and older Toyota 4x4's are good examples of that.
