292 Cheyenne Super? Do they exist

Has anyone ever seen a 292 Cheyenne Super? Or Sierra Grande? Any SPID picture for proof? I don’t know if it exists, but a factory SIPD with 292 and Cheyenne Super Equipment would be super cool to see.

I’ve never seen one in person but I’m more than confident they exist, albeit uncommon. Higher trim levels didn’t trigger a standard engine (say V8 for example) that I’m aware of if that makes sense. I think I remember vaguely seeing a 250 cheyenne super spid on here a few years ago.

Yes the Cheyenne Packages were just appearance stuff. So the base engine would have been a 250/307 like you said. I’ve seen a few with the 3OTT. One was a big block truck. Strange combo. But since the 350 was the best selling motor in these trucks, I assume a 292 super would have to have been custom ordered by someone. Here is a spid someone sent me of a Cheyenne with a 250.

Re: 292 Cheyenne Super? Do they exist

I'd love to see one. The 292 L6, RPO# L25, did not get a lot of promotion on the dealer floor. The guys with the white buck shoes and plaid pants were preoccupied with the 350/350 and tried to sell it to everybody.
Most buyers who knew what they wanted and insisted on the L25 option, tended to be buying fleets of trucks for their railroad, municipality, fire district...whatever. Most 292s were in work trucks, so no frills for the 'help'.
It's very hard to find a K/5 with an L25 option. L22 was the basic package [250 L6], but
I don't want to rule out the possibliity of a production 292 in a Jimmy, Blazer or Cheyenne. I believe in them. I really do.
They're out there, like Fox Mulder's "Truth" -- just obscured by the mists that the herd of purple unicorns kick up, just beyond the Mirage...

I know the 350 was the engine they pushed the most. But it’s funny to see that in 1972 the 292 was about $50 more then the 350. Also oddly this list doesn’t show the 292 as an option for c10 trucks. So I guess the only instance of a 292 Cheyenne Super would be in the c20 or c30. I think the best bet would be a custom camper truck custom ordered for a purpose. Same with the 4wd models. It seems like the 1/2 trucks were left out in the 292 world.

The v8 was just an option. Looking at pics of posted spid's you will see the v8 listed if present. So yes they exist. Have seen a few come up on the site.

My '68 C/10 Stepside was ordered with the L25 292, SM465, 3.73 12-Bolt rear, 17.5'' rims -- and not much else. Manual steering, manual drum brakes, manual 4-speed, no air, no radio, 516 Orange.
I'm sure it was a fleet truck. What fleet? I'll never know. I'm the 3rd or 4th owner.
CalTrans or Southern Pacific were both known to sport orange, but it's still wide open. Bought it in Pasadena, Calif. in '73.
The 4x4 trucks required a special diagonal crossmember to mount the 292. C/- frames had holes in the right places w/o a crossmember.

Yes, but as two separate RPOs. Cheyenne Super and optional engines RPOs were not tied together.

Correct, the 292 was only available on C/K20 and C30 - their VINs would start with CS or KS. You'll never see an I6 listed on a 1/2 ton SPID because there were no optional I6s for C/K10. A CS1 or KS1 VIN means it was born with a 250.

You will not see the 307 listed on a SPID. Only an optional engine (in either the I6 or V8 line) would be listed on the SPID.

Yes the 292 and cheyenne was available and had one local where I lived. It was also a 1/2 ton longbed. It was original and I believe the original owner. sorry no spid or proof

Re: 292 Cheyenne Super? Do they exist

I do not recall seeing a 292 in a super. My 69 1/2 ton swb came from the factory with a 292 and powerglide. The 292 is listed on the spid as L25.
It still has a 292 but with a 350 trans now. Its name is Ox.

Yes, what I meant was the 350 or 400 was usually paired with the Cheyenne Super trim when ordered by the dealership because it was a big seller. If the Cheyenne Super had a 292 then it would of had to have been ordered custom by someone because it is so uncommon. It’s like a utility bed Cheyenne super, they exist but they were probably custom ordered by someone not the dealer.

I did some more digging and it looks like the only instance of a c10 Cheyenne Super 292 would have been in 1971 when the 292 was still an option for half tons.

That’s funny, I picked up a 72 c20 with the exact same options (plus a service bed) a few months ago. But it’s has “special paint” and was originally yellow. I suspect it was a school service truck. The bench seat had even been recovered in what looked like school bus seat leather. It was built and used in St. Louis

thanks for adding the 71 info Awann, I was referencing 72 - that would be a rare bird, a 71 C or K10 Cheyenne Super with a 292, considering Cheyenne Super was a mid-year intro.

Including the odd-sized 7.00 x17.5'' bias ply tires? [Rim was 5.25'' x 17.5'' -- 6 lug]. I've heard the unusual size was to discourage employee tire theft. Also the military had some 17.5'' tires.
516 Paint was available w/o special order. ''Omaha Orange'' had been the color name before '67.
Fremont build. Original dealer was Felix Chevy in Downtown LA.
