Exhaust Question
Trying to decide what to do on my exhaust. Stock 283 with stock manifolds. I don’t have interest in going to headers. Is there a kit out there that fits stock manifolds that I could install or best to just take it to a shop and let them do it?
If I do it myself I’ll tackle it before I put the bed back on. I was thinking of doing something a little different in doing dual exhaust but both exit on one side. |
Re: Exhaust Question
Summit, LMC and multiple others offer stock type exhaust kits. I bought a dual kit from LMC made by Hearthrob if I remember right. I tweaked the down pipes a bit to tuck them in closer to the frame rails, installed some red Walker gpacks then angled the pipes out at a 45* under the steps. Your idea of duals out the same side will make it necessary to see a local muffler shop to custom bend you a set.

Re: Exhaust Question
Thanks, Jim. I’m still tossing ideas around in my head. I don’t want anything remotely loud, but a little rumble would be nice.

I cannot post full link for some reason. Its the Hooker Headers 16621HKR- hooker competition Manifold back system Kit I used a few hears ago. Bolted up no problem and had the necessary hardware. Inevitably some minor tweaking will be required to an extent( I needed to cut a little out of the Long section to make the axle hump line up).. Took a couple hours start to finish. Just need to buy Mufflers of your choice. |

Take it to a shop and tell them exactly what you want. Dual exhaust is overkill on that truck. You can run the manifolds into a Y, then single back to a single muff with dual outs, then two pipes coming out the side (before or after the wheel) with tips on them.

Re: Exhaust Question
Exhaust is a pain, especially without a lift. I would take it to an exhaust shop and let them deal with it. They will be done before you could get started-and if your kit doesn't fit and needs a bend you are stuck while if theirs doesn't fit they just use the machine and tweak it. I have tried twice to buy kits for cars and both times didn't quite fit and ended up at an exhaust shop anyway letting them fix it for more total cost than they would have done the job for in the first place. Exhaust is a job for the people with a bender and a lift.

MARKDTN is right, unless you or a buddy know how to weld. But I sure do like the kits' mandrel bends vs. some of the horrible crush bends made by muffler shops. A shop would have to use 2-1/2" pipes to (hopefully) achieve the same flow as a mandrel bent 2-1/4" pipe.
Left photo below is an example of a crush bend. Both are 2-1/4" pipes. The bend looks like is has the flow of a 2" pipe or worse! Right photo (of a different truck) shows mandrel-bent pipes in a HeartThrob kit that I pieced together to fit 97 manifolds. |

Re: Exhaust Question
Does anyone have recommendations on Mid length headers that will work with SBC D port heads.
