Stock Muffler and Exhaust Question
 

I need to replace the muffler on my 1970 C/10 which has a stock 307 with ram horns. I'm trying to keep it as stock looking and sounding as possible. Does anyone have a recommendation for a stock muffler? Also, do any of you have pictures of a stock single exhaust system on a survivor truck that I could compare to mine?

I found several old threads recommending Walker mufflers when discussing stock setups. So, I contacted Walker and they said, "I’m sorry we do not list products for your application. Try checking Magnaflow Exhaust." Which I did, and they only offer "Performance" mufflers.

i have a pair of tailpipes for my 72 truck now on order from Waldron's Exhaust in Michigan.they made some of the exhaust parts for my 67 impala wagon 7 or 8 years ago.beautiful parts that fit,at least in my experience.they have complete systems or parts for old cars and trucks,steel or stainless.i'm sure they could come up with a stock type muffler if that's what you want.all the best.Greg

Forget those guys and go to your local (qualified) auto parts store and get the parts. FWIW, Walker makes the whole system for your truck. Depending on the age of the pipes, maybe you should just replace the whole system?

The pics below are of the 2nd or 3rd replacement on my '69 3/4 ton with a 350. The system was probably installed in the late 70s and is routed just like the original. I wish the pics were better. The last picture almost looks like the drive shaft enters the top of the muffler.

I installed dynomax mufflers on my truck recently and was surprised at how quiet they are. The ones I got were 2.25" diameter pipe, 20" long oval case. I just switched to duals from a stock single exhaust setup and it actually is quieter now than it was. There was a noticeable difference in power as well, but that was going from single 2" pipe with crushed bends to 2.25" pipe with mandrel bends. Mine is a 350 with a four bbl though.

I just sold a 1970 K20 that had dual exhaust and stock mufflers. It was so quiet and smooth and nice to drive.

My C10 has dual exhaust and stock mufflers. I love it.

Thanks for the info guys. I see a few of you still recommending Walker. When I go to the find-my-part section of the Walker site and put my truck info in, it only lists one V8 and when I select it, it shows it as a duel exhaust setup. I know that Walker quit making the single exhaust Y-pipe that they used to make for my application. I wonder if they only make single exhaust stuff for the 6-cylinders now. I thought it was odd when the guy from Walker recommended I try Magnaflow.

I've had a few members recommend Waldron but they have a lead time of 8-12 weeks right now and I need to get this taken care of sooner than that.

When you say "stock mufflers," do you remember what brand and model they were/are? Quiet and smooth is what I'm looking for.

The exhaust on my C10 was done at a local muffler shop 32 years ago by a friend of mine. The exhaust is still on the truck. He used mufflers from his regular supplier and i have no idea what brand they are.

I transplanted big block dual exhaust hangers to my small block truck and the shop made the exhaust.

You are right, the Walker website does not list an exhaust specifically for your application, but If you search 1970 C20 it has an exhaust for a 5.7 (350) which should be the same exhaust that is on your truck.

In addition if you order the Walker parts from your local auto parts store, you don't pay freight and if they don't fit you can send them back.

O'Reilly Auto Parts sells Walker locally.

Thanks for the info Larry, I didn't even think to try the C20. I tried multiple years of the C10 and couldn't find anything.

Are these the ones you installed? From your description it sure sounds like the same ones I installed on my 72 C10 with stock 350 and rams manifolds and added an H-Pipe with them. Noticeable power pulling away from the muffler shop after install and I agree nice mellow tone and wake up when you walk on the truck.

I'm interested in this also. The Walker website does not look useful for a stock exhaust. I put in 1970 C20 and it shows a cute picture, but they don't actually sell the Y pipe nor front pipe. They have the tail pipe only. Perhaps they used to sell stuff for our trucks back in the day.

The previous owner, Hooverfish, had a single exhaust kit from Waldron installed on my 72 with the 350 engine. I believe it has the "mild imposter" muffler. Looks factory correct to me, and has a very nice old school exhaust note.

I sure would like to have no note at all, no mellow tone, no wake up. As close as possible to can't tell the engine is running, ever.

I was looking for exactly what you are looking for: factory quiet exhaust all the way through the rev range. Last winter I took mine into a quality shop with some experience with older vehicles. They pulled out the original bend card (I think is what they called it) and made me a single exhaust using factory specs as a guide (I asked for a couple of exceptions). They installed a Quiet-FlowSS muffler and I am very happy with it. The owner of the shop said this is what would go on an eighties pickup as a stock replacement. They stocked it, so maybe your local shop might, too. Model number is 21910 / 9 006

With 2.5” pipe upstream and a 2.25” tailpipe, it’s actually a little deeper sound than I thought it would be. Now that I have all my sound deadener in the cab I’m very pleased.

Hey Ben, thanks for the pics. Did the use stainless or aluminized tubing? Also, did they replace your Y-pipe coming off the exhaust manifolds? If so, did they fab one up or use a prefabbed unit from somewhere? If it was prefabbed I'd be interested in the model number and manufacturer.

1. Aluminized. The owner of the muffler shop convinced me that rust will never be a problem with the sheltered life this pickup will have.
