402 in my 68 Golden ?
 

I have a good running 402 what would be involved in putting the 402 in place of the 327 ? It's a short water pump engine with a single pulley setup vehicle only had an alternator so I would need to change it for power steering setup. I know I'll need the mounts but any other issues I should look for . The 68 has a good working turbo 400 so that would stay.

The 402 was out of a 71 SS Chevelle that was wrecked many years ago. Had this in my 66 when the original 396 developed a nock which is sitting on an engine stand in my shed

The BBC motor mount towers. (I know they will fit on the SBC towers but it if you use headers they will likely not fit. A radiator that will cool the BBC and mounting for it. The BBC fan shroud. And to be totally correct the exhaust heat shield. And power steering setup you mentioned. Pretty easy swap IMHO. One could dig out the assemble manual and look at the BBC option as their is stuff I have missed.

Sounds good the truck has a 4 row in it now as it has a tow hitch but I did pick up a cold case 2 row aluminum rad with duel fans and shroud for cheap at a truck show. I'm going to run stock manifolds no need for headers unless running some big hp in my opinion

Don't forget the driveshaft will have to shortened a little. The big block stands move the engine back a little

The frame mounted shift pivot is different for BB with TH400 vs SB with Th400. Not to say that the one you are using won't work, but I don't know so just be aware.

The holes should be in place for the crossmember but I believe you will need to move it back as the mounting face of the BB for the trans moves back (as already mentioned). There are several sets of holes for BB/TH400, SB/TH400, SB/TH350. I just went through all the measuring a week or so ago.

The one thing I have not checked on is the parking brake cable brackets. I have seen one pic where there were brackets holding the cable on the rear of the crossmember. I am still checking on that.

Looks like this will be my winter project. Can do this in semi cold conditions I can get my work area to about 60 . Cant do body work on the stepper way to cool

The 68-71 mounts and brackets are sold by several companies, not difficult to obtain.

In addition to the other things mentioned, there was a piece of flat metal, about 3 inches wide, approximately 18 inches long that bolted to the pass side seam area, just behind the pass side exhaust manifold, to act as a heat shield. You may not need it, but it would make it appear as a legit big block pickup, if you desire.
The shift linkages not only boot in different spots, it are also made somewhat differently.
I’d try the factory radiator first. The aftermarket setup will likely require more amps from the alternator. You could easily swap radiators/alternators, later if needed.

Then there’s the issue of the tops of the frame rails. 68 was the first year of the big block. Big block 68’s had the insides of the top rails cut back a couple of inches. I’m just not sure if ALL the 68’s got that modification. There’s plenty of info here, if you can find it. If your frame is not narrowed, it can be done easily. I think all the 69 and newer frames were narrowed on the top, just not sure if all 68’s were (anyone?)
