Fleetside wood bed question

When I bought my truck, it came with the bedsides and the front panel, not installed on the truck. All of the bed sills are on the truck. Only thing missing is the wood and the wood strips.
My question is, will the bed stay in place on the truck without the wood installed? Just trying to free up space in my building that the bedsides are taking up. I drive it around the block on occasion, so want to make sure bed is secure. Thanks.

Re: Fleetside wood bed question

You can do it, but run a risk of bending the lips on the panels that the wood sits above/below if they are not evenly supported. The wood floor is 3/4" thick & sits on top of the front panel bottom lip & under the bed side lips. You could get a few 1x2 boards to place along edges and make it work, and then run a couple of small ratchet straps across, hooked in stake pockets for more support, especially if missing the tailgate.
