Starter turns over when shifting into park

The plastic tab was broken on my neutral safety switch so the switch remained in the park position. I replaced the switch today. I got it adjusted so it would turn over in park and neutral and the reverse lights would work. The problem is now when I shift from R,N or drive back to park the starter briefly turns over just before it goes into the park position between reverse and park. Any ideas? I don't know if the new NSS is bad or if the ignition switch is faulty.

That sounds like the new neutral safety switch is defective. It's likely making a connection (that it's not supposed to) between the 12V feed for the reverse lights and the starter.

Try temporarily unplugging the connector for the reverse lights (the one with the green wires) to see if that makes the problem go away.

I’ll try that tomorrow.

The new NSS was faulty. Another one on order. 👍🏼

I had a Mustang turn over on the starter when we opened the door and the dome light came on. It was on a lift and in gear. Quickly shutting the door was all that saved us. Turned out all those silly ground straps are important!

Check all your wiring for signs of overheating and burns. Also your ignition switch and the entire underdash harness Once it engages fully you will have a cab fire on your hands and it stinks!
