1968 base model hubcap, factory?

I bought My 68 stepside with these hubcaps on it. They’re chrome, and very light.
Anyone know if they’re factory, came on 68 base trucks? They are definitely not like the painted silver cap that came on most 68’s. I’m thinking aftermarket, but the embossed Chevy emblem looks right. Thanks, Kerry |

That is a 1970 passenger car cap.

Thanks! I just found them on eBay. Listings say 68-70 passenger car. I like them. I’ll probably put them back on it when I finish it up.

Apparently they came with black painted accents in the 6 grooves on the sides and around the outline of the emblem.
I think I’ll just leave them plain. As base as my truck was, it probably didn’t come with caps! |

Those are actually stainless steel, and likely the reason they still look good after the years of service. I recall my dad had a base 67, and had some mismatched caps when he bought the truck used, and bought a set of those from a salvage. I believe they were still on it when he traded it.

They’re so light in weight, it’s a wonder they haven’t dinged up more than they have.

I think they look good too!..and agree on the condition, its amazing how good they look, so many of them get dinged up so bad over the years!.. your not too far from me... I was just in Roanoke a couple of weeks ago.:chevy:

Always good to hear from a fellow Virginian. I haven’t found any other 67/72 guys around here. I’m sure they’re here, just don’t see many. Lots of square bodies though.

Going back the the title of this thread, a couple things. First, it would be "base trim" not base model. Model indicates the configuration of the truck, 2wd/4wd, engine type, wheelbase, weight range, and bed body. Then there were trim levels which were options. So, it's either "base trim" or "base option". Then, if it was a base trim truck, the hubcaps (on a 2wd) would be painted hubcaps. The chrome hubcaps and wheelcovers were an option or part of and optional trim level.
These caps I mostly remember seeing on base fullsize Chevys. They may have also been standard on Malibus but not Chevelles. Chevelle, Nova, and Camaro got what people call COPO caps these days. They all look great on pickups and putting car caps on trucks was a common practice back in the day of these trucks before many custom wheels were made for trucks, and going back to before there were any. Swapping wheelcovers was really popular. '68 was the first years those were available on trucks |

These exact hubcaps were on my '70 K10 when I brought it home. (With "homemade" cutouts in the front ones for the locking hubs.) It is an unmolested all original truck. SPID and bill of sale do not say anything about caps, so my guess is the dealer put them on as they were a common item on other vehicles. The dealer also installed an AM radio and snowplow on the truck, but that is documented. I can just hear the dickering now...."I'm not paying a dollar over $3000 unless you throw in some hubcaps!"
