pretty self explanatory topic.

searched and couldnt find anything to answer the question.

the previous owner smoothed out the tailgate but the lack of the chrome "CHEVROLET" just kind of looks weird.

I think all of the suppliers sell a stickers type that go in the divots of the factory tailgate. In white and chrome. But they are about 6" high.

What you are showing in the last post is an upper level rear trim panel typically Cheyenne or Cheyenne super. While the wood grain may be later year specific I do not think the band is(someone correct if wrong) used in 69+? Stock wise believe the trim is wrong in that picture. The lower tailgate trim piece was not included when the band was used as far as I understand. My 72 Custom Deluxe never had that rear band and has upper/lower side trim + stainless around glass. Those small letters were never used on gates by themself, only on the band. Under the trim panel would be recessed letters embossed into the gate which were painted. That is what would be typically found on a no trim truck. Smooth gates are available aftermarket.
Anyway, replacement letters are availble. They will bolt, screw or rivet on because they are meant to go on the band. Guessing you could get a set smooth the backs if needed and apply your own double stick tape if that is what you want to do.

I'm positive they are not adhesive backed. Not sure if they have pins or what. But, you could cut the pins off and use 3m VHB tape and make them adhesive backed. Lots of trimming with a razor blade.

I think the letters you have a picture of at the bottom of post #1 are the the 67-68 hood letters which are smaller than the tailgate band letters.

Take the letters and figure out how you want them placed on your tailgate. Then go get some JB Weld, the epoxy u mix together , and use it to attach your letters and they will be still attached a 100 years from now. Talking from experience.

so while i dont think it looked horrible i just dont think it ended up fitting the look of the truck.

Agree with raggedjim, looks good. Seem to be a good size. Think the tailgate band letters would look to small without the band.

nah those are the wrong kind.
those are for the embossed letters in the tailgate.
