Brake Line
 

The steel Brake Line that runs from front to rear, burst about 3 feet in front of the rear axle last night. I would like to stop at a local auto part store on my way home tonight and pick up a premade brake line to replace it.

What is the length and type that I will need to pick up (assuming they make one off the shelf that will fit)? This pic shows the line that I need to replace. Thanks

Local auto parts stores aren't going to have a premade line in stock , The way I see it is you have 4 choices ,

1) stop at a local brake shop and have them install a section in your existing line
They may not want to patch a brake line ,

2) Call Inline tube and buy the section you need and have it shipped to you .

3) Contact Ecklers in Florida and buy a new kit and use the section from the kit you need and replace all the other lines when you have the time .

4) buy a short section and line connectors from an auto parts store and cut / flare and repair it yourself , But if one line "burst " the rest should be replaced .

You didn't mention what year or model truck you have .

If you have a Short bed ?





That looks like the one , Don't forget to use line wrenches to avoid twisting off the old connections when removing the bad section . There's not a lot of room to work in at the rear connection , don't forget brake fluid and your going to have to bleed the system . Have fun ! I hate working on old brake lines . :smoke:

Here is a picture of the line you need , I switched over to all Stainless steel lines and had these on the shelf . you'll need 7/16 and 1/2" line wrenches . :chevy:

If that steel line rusted thru, how old are the brake hoses? If I was going to replace my brake lines, I sure would replace the hoses. I do not like bleeding brakes and I would not like to go back and replace the brake hoses and have to bleed the brakes again. I just thought See if you can get the bleeder screws to turn on the wheel cylinders. They just might brake off and need replacing too.

This was all replaced when the previous owner did a Disc Brake swap. I am sure I know what your next question is, and no I do not know why they did not replace the steel lines as well.

Well, the line I ordered from inline tubing arrived yesterday. They had to make the line as it is not something they stock. The line was a perfect fit and needed no modifications to work. shipping was a little slow but worth the wait.
