OT oldsmobile rear axle interchange question
 

I just brought home a 72 cutlass 442 that I bought cheap at a junkyard, this thing is very restoreable, but is missing the rear axle housing. The cars I have to pick from for the housing are as follows...81 cutlass supreme brogham, 81 pontiac grand prix, 68 cutlass 4dr, 68 442....I'm hoping any of those rears will bolt under this 72, so I can pick the ratio I want instead of having to buy another, all the axles look the same, and I've heard they will fit, I'm hoping someone on hear knows for sure. Thanks a million.

The 68 cutlass rear is the same as a 442 rear no doubt with out posi. any 68-72 a body rear will work

68-72 should be fair game.....its been a long time since the Vista Cruiser days! We all know about the 12 bolt olds that wasnt(10 bolt ring). you might look at Chevelle,same era for the 12 bolt that will rock & roll.....69 longhorn.

YES ALL THOSE REARS WILL FIT BUT I'D STEER AWAY FROM THE 81 CUTLESS AND PONTIAC THERE ONLY 7.5 RING GEAR AND VERY WEAK..BLEW A FEW IN MY DAY

the camaro guys run 7.5" all day long and never blow them up is whats wierd... no matter the engine they put in.. ive been digging around and have seen that soem of them are running some damn quck times without a hitch(stock rear axle)

alot of the 71 72 G body ran the 8.2" axle I have found, but you can find 8.5" too, on each side of the third memember housing near the left and right rear webbing below the cover youll see two square corners jutting out, those are the 8.5", or if one has a 12 bolt then that will work http://67-72chevytrucks.com/board/ubbhtml/biggrin.gif
maye i can find a pic to show visual diff of 8.2, 7.5, 8.5 axles

bbs1965 from this board is parting a 442. He is located in DFW Texas.

Fast...I've got a subscript to GMHi-perf.tech & most of the serious cars in it usually replace the rear w/a stronger one if putting serious power to the ground w/sticky tires. The 10 bolt/8.5" from late 60's to mid 80's can take more abuse than the late 80's & up 7.5"ers can from what I've seen @ the local 1/8 mile track. I guess it depends on the set-up/combination.

i dont know how there keepin those 7.5 together..had an 81 monte carlo..350, flat tops..solid cam..auto..nothin special..didnt even have sticky tires and could'nt keep those 7.5 together..maybe they got a secret..

i'm not looking to do alot of racing, but I do plan to abuse it just a little....LMAO, I've got a stock 455 4bbl from a 76 delta 88, and a TH 400 to go behind it. I just want to make sure any of these rears will bolt under before I go to the trouble of pulling one, and if it breaks, hey, I've got 3 more LOL

Any 68-72 chevelle/malibu/skylark/GS/cutlass/442/GTO/montecarlo or tempest axle will bolt in. Chevy seems to run a smaller Ujoint than the others, in my experience. 64-67 will even bolt in, and they're two inches overall narrower for fatter tires.
Try hard not to use the Olds "O" axle, as parts are unobtainable.
General Motors used the 8.2 10bolt through 1970, and phased in the 8.5 in 71, and are still using them in trucks today.
