Camper Tire & Wheel combo of the 70s
 

Does anyone recall the camper wheel and tire combo that was very common in the late 60’s and 70’s. The rear tire was quite wide, mostly filling the tube. The wheels were steel, painted white and likely 10 inches wide. May have been 12 but I doubt it. I recall the tire being 10 ply bias with a tread more suitable for highway than off road with a very high for the times load rating. Intended for camper hauling, seems most trucks pulling that duty had these wheels in the So. Cal area. Unsure of other parts of the county. I know Winton Tire, a So Calif tire dealer at the time, seemed to be the place I last purchased in mid eighty’s before I sold the truck. Is there a set up that closely resembles this combination tire wheel set up? Most setups I see today have more of a off rad appearance I am trying to avoid. I really liked the look and trying to duplicate. My search is not yielding much success.

My truck has 9.50s on 16.5 inch wheels, but I've seen the ones you're asking about. I'd be interested in this. I'm up for new tires.

My dad when hauling our 10 1/2' camper had a set of 12.50 16.5 tires and rims. Normally used the stock 9.50 16.5 wheel/tire combo. Unfortunately I tossed the rims when emptying my folks house when they both were gone. But, I still have the truck!

Back in that era, the 16.5 was king for camper service. Wide aftermarket steel wheels were available in 8.25 for the 10-16.5 and 9.75 for the 12-16.5. Dick Cepek sold a lot of them back in the 70's. The old school look will require some searching for rims and bias tires ( Samson Tires shown in photos 9.50 front -12.16.5 rear) Newer aftermarket 16" wheels are available in wider widths if you go the more modern route. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/w...0805?rrec=true

I bought wheels and 12-16.5 tires for my '69 from Dick Cepek for the rears in 1971. Still have them and chains to match.

That's it. Whowa. Time warp/flash back. Figured they were 16.5 I'll lean towards a 16 for simplicity and likely lower cost, but if the look is not right, I pop for the correct dimensions. Thanks for the replies. All were very helpful.

I'd look at the 16" wheels, but do they have the load rating? I know that 16.5" for trucks and 14.5" for trailers were configured differently. The 14.5" size kept people from using car tires and over loading them on trailers.

I had aluminum slots on my camper truck. The sizes run back then were 16.5 in 8.25"w and 9.75"w. The factory offered the 8.25 and the 9.75s were aftermarket (or both). For 16s you could run 7" Ford Accurides, or buy Wheel Vintiques 7s or 8s, up front. And 16 x 10" Wheel Vintiques on the rear
