Tailgate rattling
‘68 fleet side. I am getting a lot of rattling noise from the tailgate. Mostly over bumps. Can’t pinpoint if it’s coming from latch assembly or hinges. Any tips on getting it not so loose and noisy? Thanks

Re: Tailgate rattling
You could be missing the rubbers that retain the tail gate support rods when the tailgate is closed. The gate also should have a couple rubbers bump stops at the top. If you have both of those sometime they rattle at the lower hinge. You can purchase an aftermarket hinge that has nylon inserts in them.

found this on google search. they are calling it an anti rattle kit.
So i am going to check to see if I have those pieces on my truck already. Not sure where the blocks with the holes go. |
Re: Tailgate rattling
I have used rubber fuel line at the point where the hinge pivot hangs. I would wedge it into the bed rather tail-gate, about 1.5 inch long piece.
Used along with the other 4 rubber bumpers. |

I have included a couple of pictures on how GM installed them anti-rattle rubbers.
Edit; Ops I was a little slow, but I like the square body color! |
Re: Tailgate rattling
If you are missing those rubber bumpers and decide to order some, I don't recommend Counterpart brand. I ordered a kit with the small round and big square rubber bumpers. The square/rectangle worked out fine but the triangular nipple on the round bumpers was much too small for the original holes. They wouldn't stay in without falling out. Ended up buying some off eBay that fit.

Re: Tailgate rattling
I have the bumpers in the correct spots. But they are old and hard. The tailgate handle seems loose. Anyway to tighten that up?

Re: Tailgate rattling
I replaced the rubber bumpers. Helped but the main cause to me seems to be the handle itself. Has a lot of play in it. When you lift the handle its metal hitting metal to move the rods in the the tailgate. So while your driving along the handle is hitting the metal arm over any bumps.
