72 rear view mirror.

What is correct for the 72 glue on rear view mirror? I have seen them in black and in stainless like the earlier ones. Was there a night/day option that was stainless and a black one otherwise?

Re: 72 rear view mirror.

Mine was black with day/night adjustment. Was like that when I bought the truck in '77 and I believe it was original.

Thanks.
Anyone else want to peek into their 72 and see which mirror you have?

Mine was stainless with day/night adjustment. But it kept falling off so I switched to the earlier style that screws to the roof. OEM mount from a 69 but aftermarket mirror head which seems to vibrate more than the original did. Not sure if that is because of mounting it to the roof or because it is aftermarket.

My last 72 had a factory black with day/night adj. It was orginal to the truck or at least the orginal owner said he never changed it. I asked him because I thought all of them were stainless.

Re: 72 rear view mirror.

I wonder if the difference (black vs SS) was just a matter of the trim level of the truck?

Here is mine and 72's mirror. Back with adjustment - far as I know it is original.

Re: 72 rear view mirror.

Flat black metal body with black rubber gasket around the margin is OE for 72 regardless of trim level from what I know.

Talked with a guy today that said all 67 72s were stainless. A few earlier ones were painted. (50s 60s)
He thinks black wasn't available until the mid 70s. Possibly had to do with reflection at night with the stainless?

Here’s what I believe is the correct mirror for a 72 truck. Note the body is painted metal without a grain imprinted plastic cover, which I believe came on subsequent model years at some point.

I plan to be at the Memphis Super Chevy show tomorrow. I will look at the stockers and get an assessment of what they have. I'm sure there will be several there.

Re: 72 rear view mirror.

My '72 has black and I have two originals in my parts that are black. I have a new one I bought from Golden State Pickup Parts years ago and it is polished stainless. I assume it's a reproduction.

Well I went to Memphis and what a bust. There was one 72 Cheyenne truck that the owner said was mostly original. It had a black mirror.

My 72 Sierra Grande has a stainless day/night mirror.
It is original.

Current 72 a K10 SWB Custom Deluxe was purchased in 1998 and has a black mirror. IIRC am the second owner. My first 72 A K20 LWB was purchased in 1980. Believe it had a black mirror as well, was some time ago so I cannot say 100%. Who knows what could have been changed in the years before I owned either truck.

Yes. CST was the top-of-the-line Blazer 69-72, and the only trim level option in those years.

In 71/72 the top trim level for Suburbans was Custom Deluxe

Re: 72 rear view mirror.

1972 Models used GM Part # 911582
Which was a 10" Day/Night, Windshield Mounted Polished Stainless Mirror & Arm
The Part # can be cross referenced at GM Parts Wiki
http://www.gmpartswiki.com/getpage?pageid=22765
When those were discontinued the later year Black mirror part # was provided as a replacement.

I appreciate all of the input. I wonder if maybe different plants used different mirrors?
I went ahead and bought a stainless one for my 72 jimmy.

Re: 72 rear view mirror.

Have to politely disagree that black isn’t correct - lets see some OE stainless mirrors correct for 72. Any survivor examples to share?

My orange truck has the original mirror and it is stainless. My GMC Sierra Grande Longhorn has a stainless one too. But I've pulled a lot of black ones out of 72s as well. I even have an early 72 with a 71 mirror on the inner roof.

Re: 72 rear view mirror.

It is looking like either is possible. Just a matter of which trucks and why.
