Rochester 1 bbl Carb rebuild (without Power piston rod)

2 Attachment(s)
1972 chevy C10 250 CI engine Rochester 1 Bbl carb (#7042021) M-MMV.

I'm rebuilding the 1 bbl Rochester carb on my Chevy truck. When I opened it up and removed the power piston, there was no rod inside to activate the power piston (#45 on an exploded view of the carb). I thought I may have lost it in disassembly, but when I looked underneath the float bowl, the opening that the Rod for the Power piston would stick through, it was plugged with a rounded, apparently factory installed object/plug. (see pic below) It is a rebuilt carb (I inherited this about 12 years ago from my father-in-law and he bought it used a few years before) but I can't tell who rebuilt it. Has anyone ever run into this? I have another question about a suitable replacement carburetor for this one, but I'll put that in another post.

Chevy Vegas ran carbs without the power piston, as well as the 4-cylinder Chevy Novas, which (I believe) were discontinued after 1970. Talk about some gutless dogs. Maybe ask Cliff Ruggles or Ken Betts, They're the remaining carburetor experts of that era.

That's good information. I never knew they made a 4 cylinder Nova LOL. I really didn't expect the 6 cylinder truck to have a bunch of power, but I never really noticed a lack of power either. I just wonder what they were thinking by putting it in there without a rod!! Crazy.
Thanks again.

The Chevy 4 banger was known as the ‘Iron Duke’.

I tried the carb parts site and they weren't able to help. It is a good resource though, thanks.

I was not able to find either member you mentioned, but my next question should be easier.

Neither of those guys are members here. Sorry if I gave that impression. Cliff is trying to retire, or did.

You can find Ken at https://www.everyday-performance.com/

They do Quadrajets mainly, but if they don't do your carburetor, could point you to somebody who can.

I think you are absolutely correct! This is an image from Ebay of a Rochester
1 bbl Carburetor that says it is for a 1972-1975 Vega...Look at this image...no linkage in the hole for the power rod linkage..
Might be a coincidence, but maybe not.

To add to my post, though going a bit off topic, the engines in the Novas were all cast iron, but the Vegas had an aluminum/silicon alloy block and a cast iron head.

You guys are talking about 3 totally different 4 cyl engines.

The Chevy 153 4 cyl used in the Nova and early G series vans looked exactly like the 194/230/250 inline six, only shorter. it even had a few interchangeable parts.

The 151 in. 4 cyl Iron Duke was a 2.5 L Pontiac engine even though it had the Chevy bell housing pattern. Totally different engine that even had a couple of totally different variants of its own.

How could you confuse the 2.3 OHC Vega Engine with either of the two above. Over Head Cam?

Is the carb a MonoJet ?
