Med. Gold Paint Match PSA

Putting this out there as a public service announcement. My medium gold (#526) 70 GMC still has its original paint. The tailgate was pretty rough and there were a few areas of surface rust that I wanted to fix and paint. I was having a nightmare of a time trying to find a correct paint match for 52 year old paint. I don't have a place that makes custom match spray paint anywhere near me so I had to resort to taking my ash tray to different stores to compare it with different spray cans but couldn't find a match. Even the actual paint from automotivetouchup.com didn't match (not knocking them, they make a quality product. Just tough to match 52 year old paint). I was at O'Reilly's yesterday getting a plastic float for my sending unit and bought a can of gold Dupli-Color engine enamel paint (DE 1604 Universal Gold) to give it a shot and it's almost an exact match. Hopefully this helps!

Side Note - I want to thank everyone in this thread http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=666161

I bought a Omix-ADA Fuel Level Float (#17729.01) to replace my brass float and it worked like a charm! It's designed for 55-86 CJ's but it was a direct fit.

I don't work for any of these companies, just wanting to pass along some good info.

The top was taken a few weeks ago and the bottom was the day I bought it. I'm kicking around ideas for preserving the paint as it's kind of thin in two spots. I'm strongly considering the Poppy's Patina wipe on clear coat.

I love that Medium Gold Poly. I still have a gallon of acrylic enamel and additives left over from when I painted my '70 CST/30 back in '88. It's an unopened can, still liquid, but kind of afraid to try using it. Thanks for the tip. Did you look at Rustoleum's Metallic Gold? I painted a Hot Wheels using that and I thought it looked right. But that's not up against the original

Same color as my '70. Could you post a pic or two of how well it matches your original paint?

I wonder How close of a match is this to 68 gold?

I wonder. I have always wondered if the 50th anniversary gold was the same paint as the later medium gold poly. I never looked into it or put them side by side, but to my eye they are the same

In the top picture, the door jam below the red line is where I repainted and the roof above the red line is the original paint. In the bottom picture, the bottom of the door below the red line is where I painted and above the line is original paint.

I did try their Metallic Gold. It was pretty close to being a match but it was a little too dark.

I see that, too. Good to know this is closer.
