"Scroll compressor" for R4
 

Dad's 95 A/C isn't working (neither is my 83).

I know the R4's are considered crap, but has anyone used one of these redesigned replacement "scroll compressors"

They advertise them as being redesigned to not leak like the original R4 compressors.

Anyone have any experience with them?

They're reputed to have problems cooling at low engine speeds.

That, along with them seemingly being a china different compressor jammed in an R4 size package popped up when I did a more in-depth online search.

So I'm guessing a better alternative for Dad's 95 would be a Sanden, which will likely require new lines, and definitely new brackets.....

Dad's 83, fell out last week trying to work outside in the heat. I think it's time I fix the A/C on his truck...…

It has a leak somewhere. I figured it would be the R4 leaking like it is on my 83, but when I put dye in I couldn't see any leaks with a black light. I guess I need to find and fix the leak before I worry about a compressor swap.

Check your service ports. The Schraeder valves are a common leak point. If it's been converted I'd give the conversion fittings a good thrice over.

Your other likely leak point is your Low Pressure Cutout Switch and obviously the hardline connections.

I've rolled my own barrier hoses by cutting the crimp collars and installing new hose with new collars between the original aluminum hard fittings.
There are several hand tool operated options for crimping the collars on new barrier hose. Mastercool makes a really nice hand tool operated crimp set for less than 200 bucks.

This thread has got me thinking about my a/c again. I was thinking of using a 96-99 compressor on my 93. The alternator and compressor are on opposite sides of the engine. I have a van alternator bracket which moves it where the compressor currently is. I need to check my 99 and see if that compressor bracket will work on the 93. Other than the lines I'm not sure what else would need to be done.

Well until this post, I didn't realize the Sanden was stock on that gen of trucks. Or is that an A4 from 96-00?

You say the location of alt and compressor will swap locations?

Still, looks like finding stock brackets in a junkyard would be an option to make the changeover easy, and would be able to buy new 96-99 replacement lines as OEM parts instead of having some made, correct?

Looks like the A4 is the "best" compressor if one is doing a bunch of parts swapping.

So were I to rob all the bracket and accessories off of a 96 like this one, would that all bolt onto my 95 5.7?

That is an A4 in the pic isn't it?

I've had good luck with whatever is in my 98.
On an older truck I'd just go to the junkyard and buy the 98 accessory mounting brackets and swap that setup onto the older truck.

I forgot my van uses a newer style compressor also, but it's different than the one on my 99 truck. I'm not sure which is the better compressor but my van is a 92 so I know those brackets will bolt on. It might be easier to use the van stuff, but just going by looks the 99 looks like a better compressor.

The AutoZone descriptions of the compressors are:

My '93- LTR4
My '99- HT6
My '92 G20 van-HR6

And yes, people use the van alternator bracket to delete the a/c compressor and run dual alternators instead.
