Dark winds
 

Anyone catch this new show on AMC. It’s pretty cool to us as my wife is Navajo and grew up on the reservation. We live about 5 miles off of the reservation now. There’s a bunch of cool old trucks and cars in the show, but I really really dig the GMC K20 suburban that is getting a lot of screen time. I’ve noticed a few other 67-72 K trucks, amongst quite a few other oldies, the impala cop car and the el Camino are both pretty cool.

saw it, good show and nice trucks! But, given it was supposed to take place in 1971, I was appalled to see a GMT400 steering wheel on that burb!! ;)

Yea I do agree. I’m pretty sure lifted 4x4’s with radials weren’t much of a thing that far back either. I was not alive so I can’t say for certain:lol:

Lifted I might come closer to believing. Radials, not so much. My Dad built tires for a living from 64-91 and the changeover to radials was late 70s. I started driving in 1977 and I was still buying bias ply tires. Most 4wd trucks in those days ran the co-op tires or snow tires. Studded in the winter. I don't know how right this information is. I'm just going by memory.

If I'm right, this '72 K/2500 GMC Yukon XL had a previous film career, before landing the current Cop Car role, as a Blue and White Suburban starring in the surf flick, ''Big Wednesday'' as a surfwagon, and was later Duke Wayne's ride in ''Lone Wolf McQuade.''
That's quite a range for an old Hollywood truck. True talent.

We notice these things. But the vast majority of people watching won't notice.

I'm sure the people producing this show aren't going for 100% authenticity. They just want to crank out another episode.

I see many flaws in shows and realize that I'm the only one in the room that sees it.

What's interesting to me is at frame [1:33] in the preview trailer on IMDb, you see a '73 Lincoln -- Lt. Bronze Green and Tan vinyl roof -- coming at the camera. My Dad had a car just like that, color and all, that I sold to a guy from work in 2002. He never re-registered it in his name, then left town and abandoned the car. Plates traced it back to me and the AZ MVD wanted a $500 fine for an abandoned vehicle. I got out of it since it was registered in my Dad's name, and my Mom was Mrs Dad, so since she was deceased they cleared it.
Someone must've salvaged it. There was an HBO series in Tucson last year, called ''Duster.'' It was a Car-related show. So Picture Car people were in town... If that's my Dad's Lincoln, they did a nice job on the resto. He never had the vacuum actuated ''eyelids'' on the headlights fixed. These were fully down.

Found it on AMC and watched with the wife. We are hooked, liked the show and it is nice seeing what my trucks could look like if I could get the time to work on them.

Sometime they are in a gmc. Sometime its a Chevy suburban. In season 2 eoisode 1 he starts out in a late 60s suburban and toward the end of episode hes back in the GMC.

My brother bought a set of Sears Road Handlers for his 68 Charger in December of 68. First was Allstate branded Michelins.

Just for the threads sake, the original suburban was a 71 or 72 Suburban. That one got blown up/caught on fire at one point and was replaced with a 68 Chevy Suburban. Both lifted 4x4s. It looks like the GMC was a K/2500 and the Chevy was a K/10. Based off the shows timeline the GMC would have been a 71, but we have already discussed the inaccuracies. After the explosion/fire, the department replaced with an older model.

Did the '71 GMC K/2500 get blown up/catch fire on Camera, or a back lot accident?

It had quite a Career. Big Surf, Lone Wolf McQuade, and Dark Winds.

The GMC Suburban got blown up on camera during Season 2. It was part of the plot.

Wife watches TV nearly all day long (mostly crime drama, with lots of shooting- maybe I ought to lock my guns up better?), when she isn't at her sewing machine. I've seen portions of a couple of episodes of this show. The "dark" part is certainly true.

I will have to figure out some way to binge watch this series. I'm sure I would enjoy the show. I live in AZ. I have an interest in the Dine'. I love old trucks. And especially, I want to see more of the clip with a Bronze Green/ Tan vinyl top '73 Lincoln Continental bad guy car, since I'm sure that was my Dad's car. Did that blow up too?

Haha you and me are probably the only two in this thread who know what dine’ is. I love them to death. I’ve always been treated like one of them and accepted by my wife’s family. It’s an honor to be married to one, and have 4 beautiful biliganajo’s with her. We moved to the ABQ suburbs last year so we are further from the rez but still go back frequently.

It would be really cool if your hunch is correct about the car.

Well, you're much closer to the Dine' than I am. My family used to have a cabin in Pinetop, AZ, Navajo County, but we were much closer to the White River Apache Reservation. I skiied Apache Sunrise a lot when I was younger and still had knees. I got along fine with Apaches. I bought an Apache Dictionary from the U of A Press, and listened to the rez radio out of Whiteriver. Funny to hear the DJ rattle on in Athapaskan, then say ''Motley Crue'', and spin a heavy metal record. The dialects are similar, but Apache is spoken a lot faster, I'm told by linguists. Human Being is <<N'De>> in Apachean. But I can't talk the lingo.
I knew about the Code Talkers when I was in the Marines. I had the honor to meet and talk with Code Talker about 25 years ago up at a location west of Page. I was working as a set medic on ''Evolution''[2001] a David Duchovny picture. We were way west of Page where most of the set and action was. Not sure why we were so far out. My flip phone had zero coverage. I'm sitting on the tailgate of my '71 Jimmy and hanging out with Gaffer, my Shepherd/Wolf mix, who's wearing his saddlebags with first aid gear. I had trained him up to be the Medic Dog.
This Elder Navajo man comes up to my truck, and I held up a hand [showing no knife,] and said <<Yah Aaaht Te>>
You know Apache? He asked. Well not much, I said.
Having seen the Marine decal on my back window, we started talking about the Old Corps, as any two Marines will, if they encounter one another. He asked if he would be allowed to eat chow at the Catering truck. I assured him he would be my guest.
He told me a story about when they were filming ''Fort Apache'' [1948] with Duke Wayne around Shiprock. They had local Navajos playing the bad guy Apaches. One guy, who played a War Leader was instructed to ''talk Indian'' for realism by the Assistant Director. He went to town in his own language and cut up the whole scenario, making jokes only the Dine' could get. To this day, the Elder said. 'John Ford's ''Fort Apache'' is regarded as a Navajo Language comedy classic.'
