1968 GMC Short Bed Stepside Exhaust 250 Inline
 

Hello Everyone...
I am looking to replace the stock exhaust on my 1968 GMC short bed stepside that has an in-line 250 motor. Is there a company that makes the entire exhaust system as a package? I know LMC has a kit but I've heard they are not the easy bolt on kit they say it is. I know if a couple of local shops that can make it but one wants $450 and the other one is booked until end of August. Thanks for you help!

Personally if it were me I would take it to the shop pay the $450 and consider it money well spent. I hate doing exhaust work and for that price it's not worth the hassle to do it yourself. And it will be a hassle.

I actually emailed Walker and they said they don't carry it. They told me to check with Holley and Magnaflow. Neither one of them carry it either.

I used these guys for a Mustang and was very pleased with the fit. I had them put on and he said they went on easy. They do offer the 6-cyl.

67 twins is spot on. You are going to spend close to $450 just to purchase a complete system and all the extra things you will most likely need (brackets, hangers, clamps, hardware etc.) plus you are performing the labor and it get's even more difficult if you don't have a lift. With that said, I recently purchased an entire stock style (slip fit) system on eBay for a 66 4x4 Suburban running a 292 L6. The vendor was great to work with and even provided some extra scrap pieces. I believe they carry these systems for just about any year Chevy truck/motor combo. Given the LMC kit is $180-$190 for the L6....any muffler shop is going to want around $250 labor + materials so yeah $450 is about what it would cost. However, any exhaust shop made exhaust would not be mandrel bent like a kit would be

IMHO if you can turn a wrench for $180 the LMC would be a straightforward install. The clamps and straps pictured mirror what mine look like

Like any old exhaust clamps/bolts use penetrating oil on them a few times before removal.

IDK if the LMC kit includes a new donut gasket, but they are cheap so replace that also

If you were closer, I have a complete I6, 250 exhaust. Manifold to tailpipe, I'd give you. I just took it off my 67 swb for an LS swap.

Clifford Performance makes both an intake and headers. They recommend a 2V Holley carb.
I have an Offenhauser aluminum intake and some 1978 Clifford headers.
I ran a Holley 4160 R8007, 390 CFM 4V for 25 years, but retired it after an engine rebuild. Now I run an Edelbrock 1404 500 CFM 4V.

My exhaust system is more complicated -- the headers are 3 into 2 -- so one collector picks up the first 3 cylinders and diverts right. The other picks up 4-5-6 and turns left. Just aft of the transmission, there is a crossover connector pipe. It's on an angle like an '' N '' to parallel the distance between the 1st and 2nd collectors. 1-7/8'' pipes run further aft thru Turbo mufflers and bend outboard exiting behind the rear tires.
After installing headers, I had a shop do the exhaust pipe work. It was in the '80s, so prices would not reflect the current market, even if I could remember...

hi,i with regards to your exhaust problem,a while ago,i was on the hunt for exhaust pieces for my 72 big block truck,none to be found at all the regular places,Napa,Carquest and so on.i went to the only muffler shop in town and they have a bender but nobody able to use it.frustrating as can be since i know how to run a bender after spending years in a muffler shop when i was a kid doing bender work 100% of my time,the other guys did the stock systems.i emailed Walker,only to find out what you did,they no longer make the pieces,so i called Waldron's in Michigan and as always,they came through with new 2 1/4 tailpipes and i made a pair of front pipes and used a set of the correct length mufflers with the correct inlet and outlet sizes.this is the second time i've used Waldrons' and have been very happy with their stuff,very well made,heavy pipe and it will fit.take care
