Hot August Nights
Headed to Reno tomorrow to see all the cars at Hot August Nights.
We've been before, a few years back. Will post some pics after I get back. Anyone else going? |
Re: Hot August Nights
Cool, It has grown a bit too big and commercial for me but I have friends who still go every year. https://hotaugustnights.net/wp-conte...ule-8-1-22.pdf
Side note: Speedweek starts Saturday the 6th at the Bonneville salt flats https://scta-bni.org/bonneville There is usually a pretty good show in the Nugget parking lot and surrounding area on Friday night the 5th, Saturday night and maybe Sunday night before a lot of the first weekend guys head home. https://scta-bni.org/bonneville You might work in two for in this trip. |
Re: Hot August Nights
Based on the attached schedule of events it's WAAY too big for me to truly enjoy.
I went only 6 or 7 years ago and it was huge then. I just happened to find a good parking spot for our RV right near the route of a car parade otherwise we might not have stayed. It was fun but can't say I really want to do it again. I'd like to see your pictures though. |
Re: Hot August Nights
My best friend and his wife and a couple of more couples went down a few times way back when it started and was pretty well all down town in Reno. That was usually when I was off at a Vocational teachers certification class that I had to take to teach. Reno was out of our budget in those days anyhow.
I'd still like to do it at least once and although I have been to Bonneville for Speedweek twice that is one thing I could do every year. My son and daughter in law just moved to Wendell Idaho and that is 4 close together freeway exits before you turn south to Wells. Drive the 38 miles to their house. play with the grandson, Leave the wife there and take off and drive the 293 miles from their house to the exit to the salt. |
Re: Hot August Nights
Years ago maybe 30 , we visited a friend who lived in Tahoe . We hopped in his ‘60 Chevy and headed down to Reno , drove around for a while trying to see the cars . The traffic was a joke so we stopped for lunch . As it turned out we were in the best spot right in the parking lot . The cars came filled the lot for about an hour then moved on and the lot refilled. This went on all day . We got a new car show every hour !
After dinner we finally had our fill and headed back up the mountain. |
Re: Hot August Nights
2018 We planned on going to Virginia City for the opening of Hot August Nights as part of our circle tour of Oregon . When we were on the lost coast in Northern California in Trinidad the day we were to head back to Redding the “Carr” fire broke out on our route.
We hung back a night and watched the news . This fire became a monster very quickly so we went down to Fortuna and hunkered down for 4 weeks and kept tabs on the fire before reluctantly heading to the heat and smoke . This of course caused us to miss Hot August Nights . Oh well . Besides we have Kool April Nights here in Redding every year and the Oroville car show just down the road . Both are good sized and easy to do . |
Re: Hot August Nights
You might run into a buddy of mine at Oroville, He has a place up in the Berry Creek area that he just rebuilt after being burned out in that fire. Big dude who rides a Harley.

Ah but the chances of running into him are minuscule . After all I don’t spend more then a few hours there once in 5 years or so . |
Re: Hot August Nights
I'm not sure that he even goes down for that but he does go to Oroville reasonably often.

Re: Hot August Nights
I'm thinking that the lead truck is a 57 International.
I had a 55 years ago that I broke a piston in and ended up selling to the wrecking yard but I wish I had rebuilt the engine and kept it as a daily driver. That is a great looking batch of Chevy trucks. A big show like that with a lot of trucks in attendance is a great place to see if an idea will work or is a fail too. I can remember that in the mid 90's I was all wrapped up in installing Mercedes headlights and using the bed sides off an 88 or later wide box on my 48 while running the 48 fenders. Sure glad I didn't do either now. Keep those photos coming. |
Re: Hot August Nights
Missed your post about going to hot August nights might have made the 2 1/2 hour drive for a meet up.

Re: Hot August Nights
Darn, that would have been cool! Maybe next time. We enjoyed the event.

Re: Hot August Nights
Myself and a friend were there the entire time. . Saw a lot of vehicles and hit the swap meet twice.
Casie and the sunshine band was excellent as the previous show there at the GSR casino. Enjoyed ourselves as always. |
Re: Hot August Nights
I'd say that it is a bucket list event like Speedweek at Bonneville and the La Roadster Fathersday show an swapmeet or GNRS or the Indy 500. A guy or gal should do it at least once in their life. Time it right and you can do Reno and Speedweek in the same two week time frame most years. Speedweek got rained out this year but that gave the guys who were more interested in being at the car show at the caniso than the racing an out as they didn't have to go out on the salt this year.
