What's the 3rd wire do?

Never really thought about this one, but what's the 3rd wire for, in the reverse lights? I'm asking because I'm having to change out the LED bulb in the reverse light on my 87 due to corrosion. But I noticed the wire on the outside of the plug is disconnected. The one not coming out of the bottom. But the light was working anyway. It only recently died.

So I wanted to ask what that 3rd wire is actually for. And if I should hunt it down and connect it when I replace the connector.

This one has 2 wires:

3rd wire socket would be for the front turn signals and running lamps--1157 bulb dual filament, they share the same ground. 2 pin would be for running lamps 1056 bulb, single filament.

On the next gen they use dual filaments with both lit for brighter reverse lights.

Thanks! I may as well ask here.. Does anyone happen to have a wiring diagram for the power window system? 87 model. Maybe they're all the same, I dunno.

Google has plenty that are blurred out and difficult to read. I also have the chilton's manual but it doesn't have that particular diagram.
