Home Made Grills

Well I am working on a new Project for the trruck and it a home made grill. Dont get me wrong I like the girlls offered in the mags but I wanna make mine :) heres wat i'll do..tell me wat yall think.
I am gunna head to Ace hardware and buy some Alum. Flat 1 to 1/2 inch in width flat rods. I will Line them up and get 3 steel rods and drill holes in the sheets and run the rods through each hole to hold them in place. There will either be 2 rods on each side or 3 with one in hte middle. Then I will weld some brackets on so it will bolt on just like a After Market one would. Wont be as good as a Bllit but I dont care I made it :) Anyone ever done this? Wat yall think?

I say go for it! I have an '84 that Im gonna do the same thing on. Im planning it a little differently than you are, but I like the idea of doing some of the trick parts myself too...corn

Hmmmm I'm all for doing stuff myself but It's really hard for me to justify 20-30 hours worth of work and $50 worth of material to recreate a grill you can buy for $100 from Summit and install in 10 minutes.

Yea I can understand why you'd think that. So....a friend talked me into buying one from summit HAHA. I do like to make things myself for the truck but....this was cheap and it look good :) Comes in friday I think....Pics be up then :P Next Project is a new sub box :)

I recently replaced my grill in my 78 stepside. One thing i noticed is that the grills are slightly tapered . Peaking in the middle from both sides. slightly V shaped if that explains it better. In other words straight alunumunm bars or rods may not work. Check out my review in the review catagory under billet grills this may help you with your design. :bowtie:

Snap some pics before you put it in. I have an idea cooking in my head and would like to see the grill not installed.
