What years were the ball bearing ash trays? Was going through some parts and ran across these.

There are actually 3 different slides. Metal to Metal/Plastic to Metal/and ball bearings. I don't remember the year breakdown though.

Yeah I figured they would work in all years =) I thought these might be early because of the paint colors.

I didn't realize there were actually three styles ... Interesting.

Pretty sure the '67 is metal to metal slide and the bracket is welded to the dash, so the others won't interchange with it.

Yep 67's are there own special thing.

Re: Ball bearing ash-trays?

'67 ashtrays have a thinner face, metal to metal, with straight tracks

68-70s have the ball bearings, curved tracks

71/72 nylon to metal, less curved

Ok there ya go! Thanks guys.

I should have known the 67's were their own thing since so many other "things" on them are.

My '68 C/10 Stepside was part of a fleet order. I once had the Build Sheet [long lost now] and it specified ''DeLux Ash Tray''. E.G. Ball-bearings.
[But no Radio or AC]

Ashtray? Who needs an ashtray?

Few car manufacturers have provided them for the last ten years. Ford offers them as a optional accessory and a couple of European cars offer them as a fairly costly option.

I still see people smoking in cars. My old truck has AC. When I see brand new cars with a window down, it catches me eye. Sure enough, an arm comes out to flick ashes and then a butt goes dancing across the road.

Every year we have more fires in CA, and fewer and fewer cars with ashtrays.

Came out of the wrecking yard, out of some kind of Toyotle. I had grabbed 3 of that style to see if I could get one of them to fit.

Weirder still: The SPID specified an L25 292 L6, SM465, WC Jr mirrors, and 7.00x17.5 tires.
As fas as radios -- not in a Company truck, back then. Employees might be distracted, or think work was Fun.
Smoking is rare now, but in 1968 most people smoked cigarettes. It was all over TV and print ads. All the movie stars smoked.
[Except Lassie, maybe.]

I have never smoked but have always used my ashtrays. Very handy things

I saw a YouTube video where they crushed a Prius under a surplus British Chieftan tank. It was good for entertainment.

I dont have any use for them so I think I might do a little surgery and see if I can come up with anything. I always used my ashtrays for change but it was such a hassle to get anything out if I needed a quarter or something. Pull the whole thing out, dump and go. Need to figure out how to hide and add one of these haha.

Re: Ball bearing ash-trays?

I see keeping change in the ashtray as very convenient. There is even an easy way provided to slide it out to retrieve the change. I do the same in my '95 Suburban. I always keep a Bic lighter and a paint can/bottle opener in them as well. Both come in handy for various things.

Bringing this thread back, hoping for some help. What's the trick? How do you install the ball bearings and get the tray together without the balls falling out and running all over the floor? haha.
I was trying tape but it's sticky enough to not have enough room to remove. Does it look like I'm missing any pieces? The ball bearings go on the backside of the hole, right?

Getting all the dash pieces and firewall test fitted and electrical dash parts set so can do wiring hopefully soon, we'll see.

Re: Ball bearing ash-trays?

They're removable and the bearings stay with the tray. They should be retained by the slide

Can't tell from your pic, but maybe it needs a bit of crimping to capture the balls

UniqueOdyssey68 03-01-2026 03:16 AM

Re: Ball bearing ash-trays?

Thanks for the picutres! Hmm. Maybe, I'll have to look at the holes closely to see. Not sure how I'd make those any tighter or "crimp" though?
Are those pics all the parts? Complete, and the tray slides in/out of the receiver screwed in the dash hole, just as is in your pics?

If so, mine looks just like yours, I have all the parts then, not missing anything. But the slide was mentioned above, so I'm not sure if that applies, not sure what the slide is, on the tray parts or the receiver/in-dash part?
