Universal AC evaporator

Well I have spent about a good 3-4 years trying to install AC into my heat only 79 Truck. I thought I finally achieved success this year but a leak in used evaporator has me thinking of new ideas. I used an old ARA part that was oblong and fit tucked inder the defrost vents. Everything else that I have put on truck to install AC is new. Has anyone tried using one of these universal AC evaporators? On ebay it is like 90. They dimensions are 16" wide, 13" deep and 6" high. I am thinking if I can put evaporator under dash at a slight angle is should work out fine.

Re: Universal AC evaporator

I have a vintage air kit in my K5. I paid $1600+ for it since it was supposed to be "the best". But I'll never do another under dash AC again. The fan is extremely obnoxious at anything above 40% speed. I already have headsets and an intercom in this truck for highway driving with the 6.2 and huge mud tires, and I wear the headsets anytime the AC is set above 40-50%. In a truck without headsets I just wouldn't use the AC, or I'd drive something else.

I'd expect any under dash AC to be at least as loud as the vintage air, or if it's quieter it probably won't move enough air to do anything.

When I do AC in my c30 pickup and c3 Corvette they are going to be factory style systems with all new components. No other way to do it IMO, and the cost is basically the same as a decent aftermarket kit anyway.

There is some math involved to ensure your evaporator is the right size for your compressor and condenser....I'd ask someone who is does HVAC for a living on their opinion.

This was the used ARA evaporator I tried to use and cannot find anything similar. It was a pain getting it in place let me tell you. I have a Sanden compressor and the cold air blowing through was good before it leaked out. With the small truck cab size I hope/think this universal evaporator would work
