292 or 250?

Is there a quich and easy way to ID either one? I am going to start looking for another truck, and I don't want one with a 292. Is there anyting visually unique about this enging when looking at it in the engine bay? like placement of the oil filter, or distributor when compared to a 250 or 230?

On a 250, passenger side motor mount is behind the distributor, it'll look parallel with drivers side. On a 292 it is to the front of the distributor, I think. I know that the passenger side motor mount is forward more than the drvier's side mount...I just took an old man brain fart and can't remember how much.

I just checked, the 250 mounts are parallel, and the 292 passenger side is more toward the front of the engine, right behind the distributor. I think that is where the fuel pump is on a 250, but dont want to got in the garage to look again- its COLD in MI today ! Can I ask why you dont want a 292, everyone I know swears by them.

Don't knock the 292. I have had both a 250 and a 292 and I much prefer the 292. I think I would rather have a 350 but only because of the aftermarket parts availability. The 292 pulls strong.:bowtie:

the 230 didn't come in our trucks, it came in either the P vans or the G vans, not sure which. i would rather have a 292 in my truck, too bad they couldn't be had in 4x4 GMCs in 1969. parts are harder to find, but it would be nice to be a little different, and still have a great motor. inlines rock!

I don't have anything against 292's, infact, if I was going to stay stock, I would prefer to have one. But, my plans are SBC for a while, then a big block, so I was looking for a 250, just for ease of installation for the temporary SBC. Thanks for the tips guys. I knew that the mounts were different, I just didn't know how they differed.

Side covers on a 292 are ~6" tall. The rest are ~4".

I had a 67 chev that came with a 230 and a 3 speed column shift and posi. Most rust free truck I had ever come across around her and I ended up selling it without the posi.....couldnt store it anymore at the time.
