Clutch

Hi everyone,

I have a 72 c10 4 speed on the floor NVM. Did these trucks come with a clutch safety switch? If not can it be adapted? Also, in the same area, I want to install reverse lights this truck worked on a farm snd the previous owner got rid of the original bed and installed a wooden bed and for a bumper used an ibeam so it just has generic LED lights that are used i guess in small trailers. I can do the wiring on the rear lights. I wanna know if these trannys had a reverse switch built in?

Thanks

the backup light switch on a stock truck 4 speed (SM465) is on the top plate right in front of where the shifter is on the driver side. Factory wiring was a light and dark green wire that plugged into it. I believe 71/72 trucks had a clutch lockout switch as I have seen the part in various part catalogs, is it correct? I am not sure. I know my 68 with a factory 4 speed did not have one.

Thank you for your reply. I am going to have to check. Other day half asleep tried started the truck thinking it was in neutral and lunged into my father’s car, nicked the bumper on his car. Just want to have this for safety as well as my reverse lights since unfortunately I live in a huge city and sometimes drivers are not the friendliest when they see you backing up, they will rush past you and honk. Thanks hope someone else can chime in.

Re: Clutch

No clutch lock out on these trucks. Always push in clutch when starting, move shifter to neutral, then start engine. Not only is it safer, it puts less strain on the starter having to turnover the transmission too, especially when it's cold out. This applies to every manual transmission.

I have never been comfortable starting a manual transmission without the clutch pushed in. Not sure if someone told me or if I have just always been fearful of it being in gear.
