Headers

I'm thinking of buying some headers for my Roadster. Mainly to change the sound of the exhaust. I have a '92 5.7L Vortec Crate engine. Anyone have any experience with Headers that actually fit. Long or mid range?

Re: Headers

I've never bought headers that didn't fit. The only problem I ever had was with Cyclone headers on a '71 K/20 4spd 40 years ago. I had to move shift rod tabs on the z-bar, but the headers cleared linkage after that. 4wd and 2wd have different fitment, though. I've always run full length headers. Never had fitment issues with any automatic

Re: Headers

The reason I asked the question was when I was building the truck, I bought a set off of E-bay and they hit the lower A-arm. I was installing them on the bare frame. They were long tube headers. I think the back bolt on the passenger side needed to go down another 1/2 inch. So I sent them back and installed the Ram horns. I don't know what the problem was.

Re: Headers

Do you know the brand? Those sound inferior. The fitment problems I've seen are usually about the hitting the frame or the engine mounts. I'm surprised no one is posting here. We get these header fitment threads and usually many pop in with what they've used. I haven't dealt with headers on a 2wd in a long long time, so my info is outdated for what's available.

The product reviews on summitracing.com are a good way to determine if a particular header set will fit your application without any issues. You can usually find someone with a truck/engine/transmission combo like yours who has left a review. Also, many headers are available in different materials and finishes, but the fitment is the same, so be sure to check all of the reviews for those options.

Re: Headers

With most established brands, auto transmission fitment shouldn't be a problem, full length or mid. If you have a manual (with factory z-bar and extra crossmember) the selection shrinks. I used to run Hedman full length headers on my '70 2wd 3 speed. Don't have any specific model #s

I've had really good luck with dougs on my fleet.
Tri Ys on a 454. On the the truck when I bought it almost 6yrs ago. And been zero maintenance

And their 4-1 on a 400 sbc and it's been almost together 7 yrs.

I think the set I bought was from Skip White. It's been a few years. I know I want ceramic coating. Automatic transmission and mini-starter. I don't think the Vortec heads change anything on the outside shape of the engine. Thanks for the replies.

My truck had some no name headers on it when I bought it. They fit really well, when I repainted them, I looked everywhere for a tag or stamp and nothing. Ill post what pictures I have and someone might recognize them. They clear my clutch linkage just fine, I had to flip the Z bar 180 degrees. But no issues otherwise in terms of fitment.

Re: Headers

Those look really good. They seem to fit properly. I guess the first thing I need to look at is which location my motor is sitting. I think they are in the back holes.

Headers won't change the sound of the exhaust much. You can change the exhaust sound more with different mufflers. Less trouble & cheaper change the mufflers too.

I want to change the headers on my 2wd Blazer 'cause they hang too low. From a distance you can see the collector sticking down.

After going out and looking under the truck on the lift. I realized my motor is in the forward position. I think that was the problem with the Long tube headers I bought early in the build.
