90 C1500 step side 4/6 drop
I'm looking at a 90 C1500 step side.
Can I do a 4/6 drop without doing a c-notch in the rear frame rail? |
Re: 90 C1500 step side 4/6 drop
So I will say we’ve lowered OBS trucks 6” in the rear and some trucks didn’t need a notch and some did. Majority, though, do require a notch because the distance of the axle after it’s been flipped and bump stop removed and the frame is very small. You will be slapping the frame on bumps.
If you do decide to pull the trigger on a notch, don’t waste your time on a c-notch. Go with an underbed notch and be done. If you don’t know the difference, I’ll explain it to you. |

There are basically three type of notches. You have c-notches, underbed notches, and monster notches.
The factory frame for 1988-1998 c1500 is 4.5” tall. A c-notch takes about the lower 2” out of the frame and that’s how much extra you gain in travel. No cutting of bed floor. An underbed notch takes all 4.5” and still no cutting of the bed floor. A monster notch or step notch can range from 6-10” of added travel, but the bed floor has to be cut. The pictures are in order of c-notch, underbed notch, monster notch. I suggested underbed because 1) it actually strengthens the frame because it’s the whole inner and outer piece welded in. The c-notch is just a front plate and notch. 2) having that extra 4.5” of travel allows you to drop 7/8” in the rear and actually tucks 22” wheels. You’re going to cut the frame anyways, so get the most notch you can without a bed cut. My truck pictured has a 4/8 drop with underbed notch from Reklez Suspension in Texas. 1/4” steel and this is what we install on all obs trucks we lower with notches. With 7-8” drop in the rear many say the pumpkin will slap the bed. Not true because mine has never did that over hard bumps. |

Thanks for the info.
Your truck looks great. |

I've never seen a 6" rear drop that didn't need a c-notch.

My truck is an example. I purchased it new in 1997 and immediately did a 4/6 drop without a notch. Rode like that for several years without any issues. I only notched it when I went 5/7.
