1964 GMC parking rear parking brake cables.
 

Good evening guys and gals!
I have run into an issue while replacing my rear brakes. I ordered the rear parking brake cables but they require the backing plate to have a small hole for the cable to go through but my truck has two brackets, one appears to be made on the cable itself. I found a photo of what mine looks like but it is for an older model truck? I have leaf springs ,not coils in the rear does this make a difference?

That looks like the ones I just used in an 80’s differential….

My truck was stored since 1989 and appears to have the original rear end. I ordered cables from LMC but they attach to the backing plate through a small hole and not the two piece bracket that mine does.I was able to purchase the seals for the brackets from the same vendor though, but no brackets were even listed.

One needs to remember that although the 60s GMCs and Chevys are similar, they are not identical. GMC used Spicer 44 rear ends in the 1/2 ton, and they utilize the cable you have pictured which bolts to the backing plate. I was able to get a replacement from Inline Tubes that was spot on.

Well the rear cables are ordered, $60.00 per side! Ouch! Now if I can just find a pair of parking brake strut bars I can finish the brakes and finally get it out of the shop for it’s first wash since 1989!

I too bought the Inline cables for my 65 GMC half too, short box. Spot on. Not too many choices out there.

You can get the strut from Bills truck shop, in Ontario, Canada. Good guy to deal with.

As I earlier posted , I used a set like that, but for an 80’s differential, got them from Rock Auto if I remember correctly, sure wasn’t as much as you got hit for…

The rear brake strut bar is not the same on a GMC, my truck has a Dana 44 rear end and the strut bar has a major offset to clear the backing plate. I ordered the one from Bill in Canada and they do not fit.This is the correct strut bar so I am still searching for them.
