Who has an electric fan?
Who has an electric fan on their radiator insted of the motor driven one?
Is is worth it & do you notice any difference? Thanks Ron |
I've got a single electric fan on my 72 Blazer. It was put in by the previous owner and is switch activated. As far as how well it works. :rolleyes: You got me. I don't drive it all that much right now to tell the difference. The previous owner used to take it out to the desert a lot and told me he didn't have any problems. Take that for what it's worth. One advantage though is getting rid of the parasitic mechanical fan. I think that's a couple horses right there. Not sure if I helped but there you go. :)

yeah, I notice my motor not overheating in traffic, so I'd say it's definitely worth it... there's some vendors on the board selling kits for these trucks, or you can do a search and find lots of info on junkyard setups that people on the board have used...

i put dual 14" fans on my 72 hopin to get the temp down didnt notice any change in the overall operatin temp never got hot sitting still after fan upgrade
Seemed to have more bottom end after the fan upgrade it would spin the tires easier Seems ive read that it frees up 15hp but thats acording to an ad tryin to sell electric fans lol. |

I have a dual flexalite fan set up with a painless wiring relay kit. It cools my modified 400 small block just fine. Its not too loud either. Don't have any pics right now though, sorry.

I had trouble keeping my 500 cool, even after putting in a giant radiator (I'm using a 6.2L diesel radiator with dimpled tubing), until I switched to my electric fans.
The change was night and day. I'm running two 16" Flex-a-lite fans because it was cheaper to buy two than to buy a dual setup. I think they were on sale through Jegs at the time. They came with relays, temp activated switches and all the wiring needed to install them. Right now, they kick on when the temp gauage hits about 3/8. Earl Junior, You will be lucky if that set up doesn't ware a hole in your radiator. I had the 12" fans on mine and they did in less than about 3 months. $289.00 down the drain!! The radiator companies will not warrantee their radiators when you do that. That is why I designed shrouds for our trucks. I have a single electric fan. I believe its rated as about the highest there is in pulling air. Preset thermostat. It does alright. Runs a little hotter when it's over 100 degrees out on the highway (200)....than I would like but most have told me the vortecs run a little hotter.

I put two electrics in my Blazer like Earl Junior. He's right about the push through buttons, they wore holes in the radiator tubing.
I had them set to run at different temps so if it was really running warm the second fan kicked in. It worked very well until the leak! |
Electric Fan
I used a Flex-A-Lite Black Magic 15". It pulls 2800 cfm and has integrated shroud, integrated thermostat, and integrated ac relay. Put it behind a 28x19 Northern Aluminum radiator that is smaller than stock. I have a 72 c10 Suburban with a 350, live in Arizona, and have AC. Have not used in summer yet. Have 180 thermostat and have fan set to come on at 187. It rarely comes on (even when idling) and when it does it is only for a few seconds. Have metal radiator hoses. Touched them the other day while running and was surprised that lower hose felt at least 60 degrees cooler than upper while idling with fan not on. The aluminum radiator makes a huge difference. Fan set me back just under 200 bucks. Radiator was approx 275. Got the radiator from www.racingradiators.com. Don't have any pics to show but may post some in near future.

I got mine at Summit Racing. It's a Derale (Summit Part Number DER-16516) It's 16" "S" swept blades and pulls 2175 CFM. Truck is still being built so I can't comment on the performance yet. The true test will come this summer. We get a couple of warm days in the summer but not too bad. I also installed the Painless Wiring thermostat and relay kit. Truck has complete Painless harness. So needless to say, the installation, was, well, painless. I think I will remount it with an aluminum shroud though. I wasn't very impressed with the push-thru steel rods supplied with the fan. I am a little concerned with the fan rubbing against the aluminum radiator. To make a little more room, I frenched the radiator into the radiator support before I had the powdercoating done. I gained about 1-1/2" and would still be able to add a belt driven fan to work in unison with the electric fan just in case.

I went with the Spal dual 11" fans. They are shrouded and include a wiring harness and thermostat. They pull some serious air. I'll send pics asap.
