Push Button Lock

2 Attachment(s)
1968 K10 Suburban all original.

What are you guys doing when your push button lock (rear tail gate clam shell) breaks? I have the original key and now it won’t unlock. I would use the the push button lock often so I know it worked.

I have been to 3 local Locksmiths and I get no where. They always send me somewhere else. “I don’t have the tools to take it apart.” “That’s too old for me” “we tried 250 keys. We are not authorized to open the lock”.

Looking for help.

Will the key still slide into it? There is a cover over the tumblers on the inside. It can come loose and pop up. If that happens the key will still slide in but the lock will not turn.

If you want to send it to me I will take a look at it and see what I can do. I have fixed quite a few of them.

I will PM you.

The key will slide into the lock with no problem.

LockDoc did a great job for me on my 68 Burb. I would recommend him any day.

Lock is fixed. Just as I thought, the cover came loose and popped up. You can see it in this picture. It is supposed to be down flush with the lock surface. I removed the cover and twisted the "tabs" on each end of the cover so it would stay in place long enough for me to re-stake it. You shouldn't have any more problems with it.... This can also happen to door and ignition lock cylinders.

Sorry to hijack but I have a newly acquired 72 Suburban. It didn’t have keys with it so I drilled the ignition and ordered replacements. Neither of the door locks had a code stamped and I haven’t removed the push button to check. If I sent a key and the rear push button lock, could you key it to match my replacements? The 2 local locksmiths just looked at me like I was crazy. They both said “buy a new one”. I tried to explain that we’re not available but they insisted I could.

That would be doable as long as the replacement keys will slide into the original lock easily.

My replacements haven’t arrived yet. Once they do, I’ll see if they are compatible. If not, can you disassemble the push button and determine the code for a replacement key? I’d like to have it working even if it takes a separate key.

Take a look at this thread I posted back in 2013. I shows how to find the code number on the tailgate lock, if it has one.

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=561226

If it has a code number I can cut a key from that, or you may have a locksmith local to you that can cut the key from the code number.....

Let me know what you find.

This is excellent info! I was hesitant to try to remove it knowing how rare the seem to be. I have some key experience from my early days in a GM dealership. I was one of the guys that recoded many of the cylinders for replacement locks. Unfortunately all that stuff was replaced when the new digital key machines came out. All paper code manuals are gone. I would have loved to get my hands on all that stuff because I had the crimp tool for the door lock stainless bezel, the tumbler stake tool and even the tool to remove the key knock out.

I purchased the hand key punch and code books when a local Chevy dealer went out of business a few years ago. I have used it a lot. Let me know if you need anything.
