205 transfer case speedometer
Looking for information on a 1971 NP 205 transfer case. This is in a 72 chevy k10. with a th350. My transfer case was just rebuilt by a friend and looks and works great with one exception. My speedometer don't work! Everything is new to to the transfer case and works fine when I spin it with a drill. This one has a steel drive gear, so it is a smooth bore 7 tooth drive gear. I really can't figure out how it works, it just spins in there? Maybe friction? also from my research it looks like maybe I am missing something in there. Some pics Show a spacer behind the speedo gear, on the output shaft. I don't have that? Any help?

Re: 205 transfer case speedometer
Is the gear still on the output shaft of the 205??

Re: 205 transfer case speedometer
I have removed the gear!

Re: 205 transfer case speedometer
How have you determined it's not working. Did you bolt on and torqure the yoke and drive it? or are you spinning the output shaft by hand? I'm assuming you haven't bolted up the yoke because you took out the driven gear. Is that correct? Anyhow, Put the gear back in and torque the yoke, if you haven't already. And drive it, you should have action to the speedo. There is no spacer that I know of. :chevy:

Re: 205 transfer case speedometer
The yoke has been on and torqued. everything back together. Driving the truck --but still not working. took it back apart. spun everything thru the cable with a drill and speedo worked fine. I know it is something with the gears, but they look fine. Remember this is a 71 model Transfere case so it has metal gears and smooth bore output shaft. I have the case on the bench now with the cover off I can see the gears meshing. However the drive gear can slide inward enough to loose contact with the driven gear. Hense the spacer thought. I have since found some supporting evidence but not sure. I called torque king but the guy I got did not know anything about the metal geared t. c.

Here’s a picture of inside the housing. I just had mine off a couple weeks ago. WARNING… do not take it off. You could end up with needle bearing soup at the bottom of your transfer case.

Re: 205 transfer case speedometer
Also, you should be able to see what’s going on with just the bearing retainer off
|
Re: 205 transfer case speedometer
Yes I just took the retainer off. That part is still on the transfer case, so I have the output shaft still in place. Did you have a metal gear, or plastic when you took it apart?

OK I just looked it up for you. Looks like there’s a spacer I don’t remember one but here it is in the schematic. Number seven is the speedo gear number eight is a spacer. And yes, I have the metal gear.

Re: 205 transfer case speedometer
Thanks a million! That is exactly what I needed to see! I may have found one locally, in an old case, if they don't want to part with it, I can get dimentions and have one made. I will post how it works out.

Re: 205 transfer case speedometer
Hi, I’m new, just subscribed, I have a beautiful 72 Sierra Grande , I would like to pull the tranny and TCase and just do all the gaskets and seals… the transfer case just has the annoying sweating of oil here and there… is there a specific seal/gasket kit available for the 205 TC

Re: 205 transfer case speedometer
Ok… its all working great but I don’t like the sweat…. I see by looking the last time apart obviously there has been gasket goo of some sort on some of the cover plates for sure

Re: 205 transfer case speedometer
Thanks, ya it’s pretty nice, just a well looked after truck spent its life in Olds Ab , as far as I know I’m the 3rd owner, except for my friend who’s dad sold me a helicopter that sends stuff to barret Jackson owned it for a few months until I could get there to buy it.

Re: 205 transfer case speedometer
Hey fellas… I got the NP 205 tore all apart except the idler gears. Shaft seems extremely tight as though I might need to press it? But I’m wondering , I’m just doing all new seals and orings etc, all the bearings, everything is in excellent condition, so they are going back in. I’m curious… is it ok to just leave idler as is ? I might be questioned on shimming ? I’m not sure but this case run quiet as a mouse, sooner not remove it, there is just the end plate gasket to replace.

Re: 205 transfer case speedometer
Does anyone have the part # for the O-Ring on the input shaft that is inside the coupler between the trans and transfer case side ?
