Just finishing up my project and I dont seem to have a release/ lock assembly All I have is the 2 rods inside the tailgate. Thanks in advance!!

My '72 Suburban's tailgate lock had been knocked inside the tailgate, presumably because the previous owner couldn't unlock it (see below) when I bought it. I got a junkyard lock mechanism, had a key made, and discovered that it, too wouldn't unlock. I have to remove an access panel and insert a tool to unlock it. Since this is the second "failure" I'm guessing that this is a common problem: maybe a spring is missing/broken? I can't find a picture clear enough to tell. Any help?
