NP440 MY6 help
Hello All!
I am actually working on a 71 C10 that has a saginaw 4 speed in it right now, but i want to swap it out for an NP440 MY6 overdrive transmission and need your help (you guys are the experts on these since they were in the 80's) - i know from viewing pictures of this NP440 trans that a bunch of them do not have the exact same bolt pattern as the saginaw/muncie - but some do have the same. In my case, i need to retain the bellhousing that my truck currently has (saginaw 4 speed) and I want to find an NP440 / MY6 that has this same pattern - are they rare to the point i wont find one? |
Re: NP440 MY6 help
Lots of information here. They still come along here and there, but best you get a complete unit with shifter and linkage.

A few photos of 1986 C10 w/LY6 trans from factory, for reference.
First photo is truck before restoration. The remaining photos show original LY6 shifter, last shows close up of shift knob. This is the later version of the shifter, available on 86 and 87. Not sure first years to use this shifter. |
Re: NP440 MY6 help
I did this swap in my 69 C10 probably like seven years ago. I found a complete one with shifter. I rebuilt it and it was way more fun to drive compared to the SM465. The only issue I had was when shifting out of reverse it would sometimes bring 1-2 with it. I should've rebuilt the shifter or installed bronze bushings in the shifter linkage. I thought it was odd they took ATF instead of the normal 80w90, but liked the fact the gear ratios were nearly identical to a 700R4.
