72 Chevy truck Steering coupler dismantle?
 

I've never had a reason to do this but I put a C50 cab on a '70 C30 frame. I'm using the C10 steering column going through the C50's column hole. They don't line up so I bought a ujoint that should fit the oblong shaft in the very middle after I cut it in half. I was wondering if anyone has taken that part of the shaft and pulled it out of the female end that it slides into. It has something like a plastic liner in the female end. It may be made to collapse there in an accident. I have a spare I could take apart with force but maybe someone here has done that. Any takers on this? All replies appreciated.

I'm not sure just what you're trying to do to get all those parts connected, but steering is not an area for "cobble work".. Go to this website and I'm sure they have everything you need..

To answer your question a lot of people have disassembled the intermediate shaft. If you heat it with a torch to melt the plastic then put a punch in the hole in the end and drive the inner shaft out.

Thanks, I wasn't sure if it would slide out. I was going to pull it apart with a comealong. I know that upper connection is like a ujoint but it won't quite make the connection. The ujoint I bought to put in the middle is good and solid.

Just make sure you follow the manufacturers recommendations for installing the u-joint.

I think I might search for threads about using a big truck cab on a small truck. This is surely not the first time this problem has come up. Steering and brakes are no place for shortcuts and maybe. If the column isn't coming out in the right place in the engine compartment, chances are it isn't ending up in the right place in the cab either.
