Hub cap restore
I know my truck should have chrome hub caps but I've got 4 of these.
https://i.imgur.com/7l7Aw8p.jpg All in the same condition, nothing more than surface rust. I am not a body man but have done some, nothing Im proud of, shade tree metal work. I would assume.... ...strip to bare metal. Sand paper or chemicals? ...prime ...paint Any tips for the red/black colors? Paint choice? Side bar... rattle cans? Thanks much...Don. |
Re: Hub cap restore
I know this wasn’t what you asked, but…
I would use some 0000 steel wool and CLR to shine these up. Sell them and buy the chromed ones you want. Someone will be wanting these, they look pretty straight. |
Re: Hub cap restore
Yeah, you may pay more for chroming them vs. buying a set already done.

Re: Hub cap restore
Yea...all 4 are in decent shape. No actual body work outside the rust you see.
Buying chrome aint in the "Im on SS" budget(grin). Figured if I could make em better than what they are, good enough for me. I'll give 4-ott and CLR a try. Already have both on hand. Thanks much...Don. |

Re: Hub cap restore
I agree with factorystock, those caps are way too nice to "restore". With the proper technique they can be brought back to be very presentable condition without losing much of what's left on them. Tread lightly, you'll be surprised.

Be GENTLE with the CLR and steel wool. Take your time, let them soak in the CLR for a bit.
Then use rubbing compound, again, be gentle. Use a FINE polishing compound if possible, like 3M Perfect-it, using a micro-fiber towel by hand. Think you will be very happy with the results. |
