Oil cap wtf?
 

My truck is new'ish to me, and I thought I worked through most of quirks but I came across a new one over the weekend. I went to top off my oil and realized the oil cap won't come off - it just spins in place.

I know I can add oil through the PCV, but what's the deal with the cap? Shouldn't I be able to remove it? Am I missing something or is this a sign of a bigger issue?

I'll probably take the valve cover off to see what's holding the cap in place, but I figured I'd ask you all before I go that route.

sounds odd to me. first, I'd pull up and turn at the same time - you should be able to feel where the release points are. Once identified, pry up gently

Some oil caps will not twist off. They are like a big rubber plug that is flared out at the bottom a little to keep it in place. They can be a real bugger when the rubber starts to get hard

1971-72 generally used the push in/pull out rubber plug style oil cap. The 1967-70 used a twist cap.

I see this is your first post, welcome to our world. Get a tiny flat screwdriver and gently insert it underneath the plug and pry up. They are at times difficult to remove. Do it a few times and you’ll figure it out…:metal:

Thanks, guys. I'll keep at it and see if I can finesse it out without chewing it up,. The plug itself is hard like plastic, so I can't tell if it's rubber because the previous owner painted it to match the orange valve covers. It also seems brittle, so I'm wondering if the paint or clear coat reacted with the rubber and the previous owner just left it alone.

Sure looks like the plain Jane push in style to me. The rubber is slightly flared out at the bottom, that's what holds them in. When they get old the rubber becomes like hard plastic. You're probably going to have to just pry it out.

Why not pull the PCV out and boot if you need to add oil...

Just buy a new oil cap, I expect you can pick one up at any parts place or

Are those covers on the right sides? Maybe flipped? Wouldn't think they would put the oil cap under the a/c bracket. On my old covers the oil fill was on the drivers side closest to the firewall. It had a push in grommet that accepted the tall fill tube. Probably the same grommet for just a push in oil cap. Wish I still had the setup. I will if I ever find any stock valve covers. Also, you can buy new grommets. PS if you really hate the valve covers I'll give you my address. Such a nice guy.

FWIW:
Yep those are the rubber push in style. Just remember when they get old and brittle the can break apart when trying to pry out. If this happens be sure no pieces fall into the valve cover, if pieces fall in you should remove the valve cover and get the hard plastic pieces out that will be laying around your rocker arms.
