Headliner question.
 

Curious to know if anyone has used this to hold up their headliners. I plan on using the frame also.

Nope. I used 3M #77 spray adhesive and the new plastic frame pieces. At least the screw holes lined up with the new plastic frame. My old pieces just broke after being in there for 50+ years, when I popped them off.

My cab didn't have a headliner. I didn't want to drill holes in the ceiling but I wanted a headliner. I used the velcro and it works great. The headliner changed the acoustics inside the cab which makes the stereo sound better. I think it looks great without the chrome trim.

That does look good! My truck did not have a headliner, either. This gives me an idea of what I could do. I like the ideas of velcro or magnets to hold it up.

Did you use any sound deadener as well, or just your leather fabric?

You could use these magnets from MagDaddy. These I believe you can glue them to the back of the headliner and stick them on the roof of the cab.

Sicklajoie, if you go the velcro route, I've used that same brand for attaching guitar effect pedals to pedal boards. Extremely reliable and strong. Can't imagine it would have any problem holding a headliner in place

I made the mistake of using clear silicone adhesive on mine. It is in, but what a mess, and I had to end up fabricating a support to hold it in place until it finally dried, and I could put the trim in. Never again.

As for the chrome trim, I replaced mine since the holes were there and needed covering. As un4gvn says, it looks fine without it. I'd've also saved some money if I hadn't had to replace it.

Another thought that just occurred to me... in the southern (hot summer) states, I wonder how the glue on the Velcro would hold up with the heat on the roof?

The factory used some kind of contact adhesive. My headliner was well and truly stuck, after 50+ years in the sun. I used 3M #77 adhesive when I put the new one up. I don't think that it is coming down anytime soon. If you use that stuff, what you bonded together will be ruined when you remove it.

Whatever you do has to be glued to the headliner, right? I just did something like the factory and used 3M weatherstrip adhesive. Velcro and magnets both come down to glue

Yep, I've used the wide velcro to do this. There is an industrial strength version that has a thinner profile overall than the traditional fuzzy type velcro. It has more of a hook side and a catch side if I am explaining correctly. (Industrial strength in your picture is the same stuff I used)

Once it's up.. it's up. Worked like a charm.

So did you glue the industrial velcro on or did it have adhesive good enough to handle the heat up there?

Not saying this is the right, or wrong way to do it.. but it's just how we did it.

Put your headliner up, and position it where you want it without the velcro in place. Using a wax pencil or something that will wipe off (of course) make yourself a reference line on the center across the front
and of course the other three sides. I just make a line on the headliner and onto the cab roof so I could line them back up once the velcro is in place.

Take the headliner back down

The wider size velcro fits perfectly in the recessed area where it's kinda stamped into the roof of the cab. It's almost like it was meant to be mounted this way. Cut to fit the length for all the recessed areas. I peeled the sticky side protection film
stuff off the cab roof side. Clean with alcohol to remove any wax.. (at your own risk)

With the cab side sticky.. go ahead and put the velcro up. Leaving the prote tion film on the headliner side. This will allow you to really push it down good.

Peel the sticky side protector film stuff off.. and carefully line your headliner back up with your reference lines.

Press into place.


I promise you.. it is incredibly strong stuff. Fwiw, I would do it this way again. The thickness of the velcro will put the headliner and the recessed area flush with each other, it doesn't poke out.. I was really happy with how it turned out.

I used the 2 inch industrial strength velcro from Lowes. It's pretty sticky. You want to wipe both surfaces of the ceiling and headliner down with denatured alcohol. When you unravel the velcro, both the loop and pile will be stuck together. Leave them both together. Peel away the backing from one side. Press the velcro in an X pattern on either the ceiling or headliner. For extra strength, I cut 6 inch strips to attach to the four outer edges of the triangles you just made. Try to stay around 3 inch's in from the outer edge. Once you have the velcro tape attached to the surface, peel away the backing from the velcro. Leave both the loop and pile stuck to each other. Position the headliner where you want it. Once you have it squared up, press it to the ceiling making sure you're square. It's a real ***** trying to peel the headliner off to square it up. Take your time. Mine has been up for over 5 years now. No sags, no warping, and no signs of it coming off. I used the velcro because if I want to take down the headliner, there will be no mess from the glue remaining on the ceiling. I think the magnet will make the headliner hang a little low. The velcro makes it pressed up tight against the ceiling as you can see in the picture. The headliner is pretty thick, that's the reason I didn't use sound deadner.

I have a new LMC headliner to install and was curious how you applied the 3M spray inside the cab? (My new headliner has a luan plywood style backing so I'm thinking I need something strong to hold it up...other than the trim)
Also, how did you "carefully" guide it into place straight and correct?

I know that stuff once the two pieces meet, its together!

I taped painter's plastic all around the perimeter of where the headliner mounted, and reached in and sprayed. In retrospect, I would have used the 3M adhesive. I had painter's tape where the molding is installed and my son helped keep it aligned, starting at the front edge where we could see it. HTH!

You can bet I was sweating bullets. :lol:

What was the backing on your headliner?

Like I said, the backing on mine is thin Luan plywood which will keep it from sagging I'm sure but the roof has a curve to it. I'm going to have to dry fit and see how the luan "bow's" into place to mate to the interior roof metal.

I wasn't clear on that, sorry. I meant the 3M 08001 "Gorilla Snot" glue. A lot easier to apply than all the masking work I went through. My headliner was cardboard backed, iirc. Not corrugated, about 1/8" thick. I got it from NPD in Ventura, which is about 30 miles from me. Take the wife to the beach, get lunch and truck parts. ;)
