If you scroll down to the bottom of this page you will see a "Forum Jump" box. Click on the little down arrow on the right side and a box will pop up showing all of the different forums on the board. Scroll through them until you see the "1967-1972 Chevrolet & GMC pickups parts board". Click on it and it will take you right to it..... I could have just posted a link to it but this way anyone that didn't know the "Forum Jump" box was there will easily be able to find the different forums here on the board.

You can't post a Want To Buy unless you are a "Premium" member but if you see something you need for sale you can buy it.

I am not sure what year model your truck is, but assuming it is 6 lug and you are wanting to just swap in another 3.08 6 lug, keep the same wheels etc.

Your rear housing (depending on the year) could be a different length than the one you find to replace it.

Lay under your truck, and from one side at the brake backing plate. Have a buddy/ wife hold the tape and measure over to the other side at the same place on the backing plate. The early rear axles are 55.5" long measured from one backing plate to the other. This would mean the housing is an early run, up to mid year 1970.

In the middle of 1970, with the introduction of disc brakes in 1971 GM widened the rear housings .75" on either side.

From mid year 70 up to 72 the measurement will be 57".

I just didn't want you to find a 6 lug 1970 housing for example and it be longer than the one you have now.. or vise versa.

If your truck is lowered, and/or you have a specific wheel backspacing setup.. the difference in the axle length could cause you problems after the swap.

Most 6 lug housings are 55.5" long, absolutely. But kinda be careful because there are 57" 6 lug out there. 1970, could be either.

Just my .02. Good luck in your search.

And for either length rear housing there are new 5 and 6-lug axle shafts available that you can fit into them to convert them to 5 lug or back to 6 lug. If you just needed the axle shafts for 6 lug I have some listed in the parts section, or you can buy new ones from a vendor.
Pictures to illustrate the measurement CC69Rat talks about:

Even if you never place an ad, the knowledge you can gain here is worth every penny of the $25 premium membership fee.

As an example, I thought ALL 70 model C10s used the wider axle housing. I still learn something new almost every day!

Re: I want a 3.08 6-lug rearend

I have owned a 70 GMC, 6 lug wide axle. I'm not sure if maybe the variable is GMC / Chevrolet? But I just thought it would be worth mentioning.

The early axles are 30.5" long, measured from the end of the splines to the mounting / surface where the wheel mounts. Correct for the 55.5" wide housings.

The later, 57" housing takes a 31 5/16" wide axle.

But yeah, the 70 6 lug axles can cause issues with wheel backspacing. Ask me how I know.. lol.

The plate to plate method is just an easy way to check to be exactly sure which one you need either for a straight housing swap or, to convert to 5 lug. I double check them to be sure they haven't been swapped at some point in their lives, we just never know I guess.

Hope this helps.
