Re: Roof Cutting

Are you replacing the whole thing or just the skin?

If it's a big back window. Cutting it at the pillars. Is probably the only thing. That will make it easier or faster.

inner roof pictures, might be able to hammer and dolly once the outer skin is off, probably use a headliner to hide the imperfections

Re: Roof Cutting

No advice, but please take a lot of pictures of the process and post them here - it's hard to find good pictures of the inner structures of the roof.

Re: Roof Cutting

cheque for spot weld s n drill the out w a bit ( or you can buy a spot weld drill bit )

and double cheque before you peel the roof

tha you can work your way down in seeing at what else needs to be replaced

take plenty or foto s of before starting the job . so you ll have a reference or seeing at how it looked before the job was started

i would start w the one your keeping in seeing at how far you need to pull things apart , imo

than work on the one your stripping for part s s
looks like a fun project , imo

just some time involved in doing it tho

This type of drill for Spot weld works best for me.

I replaced my 61 roof skin with an aftermarket one. I cut the skin off then air chiseled what was left. Cleaned it up and used panel bond and glued the new skin on. Really wasn't bad, and the panel bond should seal it off.

Re: Roof Cutting

I do have some decent pictures of my 61 with the roof skin off if anyone needs anything. I had the skin off when it was blasted so I primed it and down the a pillars and anywhere else I could get before I glued the new skin on.

Re: Roof Cutting

hey 62C30

Pretty much what i was going to do, my inner roof needs some love when i get the outer off but sure i can get it close, going to make a headliner, should be easy as i can drill and seal some aluminum slats in the inner for support and use them for support for thin wood liner that ill cover with something

ill take whatever pictures you can share , just to use as a reference when i get the outer off

Thank You

Here are some pictures. There was some rust in some of the bracing that I think they reproduce now.

Re: Roof Cutting

ok
got my outer roof off, as expected its a mess underneath, i have cleaned up most of the loose rust and old soundproofing mats,
i still think i can save the inner roof, going to take a little time with dolly and hammer and most likely cut and weld

ill upload pictures after work

pictures
after the outer roof was off, i was able to work the inner to a decent point, im going to make a headliner so that should cover almost all of the imperfections

Thanks

I'm pretty sure it was 3m panel bond but I'll have to look. It's not cheap but it works.

It's not cheap and you lose part of it in the tip but it seems to work well

Thanks I have yet to see anything that was good to be cheap in the last few years. I bet it is cheaper in the long run. I am going to try it. I dont weld as good as I did a few years ago. Cant see or hold still lol

Re: Roof Cutting

The gun to use it is much higher than the Panel Bond on ebay

62c30 02-03-2024 11:05 PM

Re: Roof Cutting

I think for the tips, gun and adhesive is was around $100 but it's been a few years. I've used it on several projects and so far has been great. It would bond different types of metal together and since there is no heat like welding no chance for warping or burning paint.

Re: Roof Cutting

ok
after looking at the inner roof, i probably wont be happy with it
so im looking at cutting it out,

Has anyone done this, i know where the obvious spot welds are
the upper door frame, across the windshield and across the back(only accessible after outer roof is out)

Thanks

Re: Roof Cutting

I replaced only the area above the windshield on the inside and out, not the whole thing. I think that panel for 64-66 is a newer part.
