Steering wheel choices
 

Had to find a steering wheel to replace my old steering wheel that looked like it had a bad time at a nuclear testing facility. pretty sure its a 1st generation chevy truck steering wheel. bolted up perfectly to my 1972 steering wheel, had to swap out some hardware from my original steering wheel but the horn works perfect! :metal: what are you guys running for steering wheels in your trucks? :uhmk:

First generation C10 but certainly not first generation Chevy Truck. Anyway, I've runs a dozen or more different Chevy car and truck steering wheels in my 67-72 Chevy Trucks over the years. They all interchange. Comfort Grip, Camaro, 88-94, and '60s car horn ring type, mostly

I like the look of the OEM '69-'72 wheel, but I may switch to the more sensible 15" repro.

My personal favorite is the 69 Camaro comfortgrip wheel using a 67-68 Camaro hub which is same diameter as the truck column.

The wheel was used in other vehicles as well, but the Camaro I believe is where it showed up originally and I know the 67-68 hub for when the ignition was on the dash works perfectly in the truck.

I am using the 88-94 GM truck wheel. Little smalller than stock and comfortable to hold. I also used a cover as it get hot here in the southern sun.

yeah thats what i meant. i love that so many chevy steering wheels as re able to bolt on without the use of adapters.

those seem super popular and they look pretty good. i wanted a more traditional look to mine i also dont have power steering so i really do need a big steering wheel.

That's my favorite steering wheel and horn button you have Duncan_s. I have it on my 1969 truck. If I sell my truck I'll be keeping the wheel. It is a 62-65 Chevy II steering wheel and also was the one-year-only 1966 C10 standard wheel. I have it on my list of things to do to paint it and make it look new.

That is pretty interesting and is now my second favorite. I wonder what those levers in the steering wheel do and how they work.

When I first bought my '71 GMC Jimmy, the PO had mounted a tiny Grant wheel.
Steering geometry was all wrong.
After it came off in my hand -- in traffic -- it had to go. Lucky he also included the 17'' stock '71 wheel. After I put it on, the truck handled perfectly, and I intuitively knew where the nose was pointed by feel.

But I am long-accustomed to the '67-'68 3 Spoke wheel, like on my '68 Stepside. I like the way it fits between my fingers. At 16'' it's less unweildy than the '69+ style.
Someday, I may put a 3-Spoke wheel in the '71 Jimmy, and move the Headlights and Wiper switches to the positions as they are set up on the '68. That way all my controls will be uniform. [I have a '68 GMC chrome horn button.]

Great.
Seen them in the LMC catalog. I heard the early ones were too flexible -- hope they fixed that. At three bills they're kinda spendy. IMO. But finding a nice OEM wheel can be difficult 50 + years after-the-fact.

I always run a comfort grip wheel in my old Chevy's and currently have a blue one in my 68. The come in a few colors besides Black. I think they repop red along with the blue. I think there was other colors offered on original wheels. They were also used on Buicks in the same time frame.

Steering wheel I am using on my truck. Similar to comfort grip but 15", fatter and leather covered. Feels good in hand at this point. Steering will be effortless with the ram assist on my truck. A bit worried it will feel to easy..

I have the same Grant aftermarket wheel that RenoKeene has. I like it because it looks similar to the comfort grip wheel at a fraction of the cost. Real wood on the wheel, and thick grip are a plus in my opinion as well.

I was going to build the '72 Short bed I had into a white Cheyenne Super with red inside the bed and interior. I have this era correct steering Caprice steering wheel I was going to use to add an extra touch of woodgrain. It's really rare. It even has woodgrain in the rim. Sold the truck as is years ago

This was what I decided to go with, a 1965 El Camino steering wheel. Being it is a car steering wheel, I did have to build out the base of the wheel so it aligns with the steering column which is larger in diameter. I like the look of the classic steering wheels, they were definitely works of art.
