Anybody have factory 1968 396 truck engine that will share some casting numbers?

My 1968 Chevy C10 came factory with a L47 396 and 400 turbo trans. I cant find any info about truck L47 396 engines. Were these engines rated at 310 hp?

Could somebody share part casting numbers for...

Intake
Heads
Exhaust Manifolds
Carb

What carb should it have?

I am starting to think 1968 C10 trucks optioned with the 396 were very rare? Maybe less than 50-75 produced from the factory?

Way more than that produced. But maybe not that many still around with the original block!

I have my stuff, but it's all buried in my garage, long story. I am hoping to organize this summer, I will post here, when...

There was a thread here, been a couple of years ago, or so. A member posted, asking questions about big block pickups, as this one. He was a little impatient because only a couple of posts were made on his thread. He surmised that there were nearly as many big block pickups made as there were small blocks.
I didn't post on his thread. A couple of members posted that big block pickups were fairly uncommon, he didn't believe them....LOL

Of course big block pickups ARE pretty unusual!!! Way back in 1980 when I was just out of high school, I was looking for an old pickup, nothing special...(OF COURSE, it had to be a Chevrolet!!!). A friend told me about this 68. I went and looked at it. I about fell over:lol: when I opened the hood. 396, PS, PB, AC. I couldn't get the money to the owner fast enough, even though its overall condition was nothing to brag about. It's in my garage, awaiting its renewal, somewhat disassembled (engine and engine out). Folks told me I needed to scrap that pile of junk. I would just say to them, mind your own beeswax, it's mine, leave me alone!!!

HH, I hope you can get yours going asap. Im taking too long...:smoke:

I already posted my SPID before. I have what I am sure is the original engine but I want to double check. Today I did come across where a guy on this site did a breakdown of options and he estimated around 200 to 300. So still quite rare.

^ Complete with ARE "Daisy Mags", agree 100%. I'd like to find one like it without the side trim and paint it with "true flames" before I die.

The information I have is that they installed a car L35 325 hp into the trucks in 68. My original sales brochure verifies that. It would had a Quadrajet.

This might help, this document came with me. 1394 trucks, but how many of those 1394 were short beds? I've been told +/- 300-500 trucks. How many still exist?

Re: Anybody have factory 1968 396 truck engine that will share some casting numbers?

Sounds like a 1/2 ton with the 396 is an uncommon pickup, without doubt.
Years ago there was a Super Chevy show in Oklahoma. I went to that. There wer several factory big block pickups there. I not sure if there were ANY 58's there, 69-72 were plentiful.

HH,
You should start a thread specifically about your 68, pictures and all. Folks want to know!!!

I agree that the 310 HP pickup engine is the same as the 325HP engine in cars. I have mine (in pieces) and have seen another car engine, they are identical...

very nice tjc! several things to love about this truck, including but, not limited to...nice stance, one of the coolest wheels ever (yes I am biased lol), very nice black paint, and it's a longbed! :metal:

Interesting, never considered a BBC would sport a 2 brl. carb and single exhaust.

Met an old mechanic the other day who said he had a 69 with a "396", but it was really a 402. Hmm, 70 I can see it, but 69?

I've only seen three BBC in person. I've had two, and a SWB BBC is 20 miles from me. He drove it here to buy a steering wheel. I don't spend too much time at car shows - the majority I've seen had a SBC.

What a fascinating thread! Not sure if any of the following is anything close to what you're inquiring about but my truck is a factory fully optioned CST 396BB.

Remarkable truck, Hawaii too, wow. I visited the Kauai recently, no sign of anything close to vintage US trucks, but saw where all the good vintage Toyota trucks ended up. Must be great finishes or...........

For the thread, here's a castings list for BBC engines, heads, intakes etc. Glad I looked, I noted my block's part number wrong.

That's awesome! Kauai is beautiful. Most 'authentically Hawaiian' of all the islands IMO. Lol. I'm on Oahu and its turning into every-other-city-USA, unfortunately with condos, high rises, tract housing and shopping malls popping up everywhere. Kauai with its lush green mountains and valleys preserved the true beauty of Hawaii.

Believe it or not there are quite a good number of good 'ol American muscle cars, hot rods and trucks running around. But like you said, can't hold a flame to the number of Toyota trucks running around everywhere. We are the Toyota capital of the world.

Thanks for the link to the list. I'll have to take a look and see what history and other info I can find.

Sorry to be late to the party, what is it exactly you’re trying to find out? my 68 CST has all the original engine transmission and accessories

Yeah, sadly I was just discussing how man-kind is out of control, deer migration for instance, we're literally pushing them off their pastures, it's sad, I used to have many, all gone, and now it's a push from the west forcing them downtown. On a brighter note, when I swam in Hanalei Bay under heavy rain I knew I was in heaven. And yeah, we saw the canyon. One minute it's sunny, 8-10 minutes later the clouds drop, heavy rain and a rainbow inside. Love the beautiful climate, makes a guy want to move there, but after seeing Swiss Alps, oh man.

That reference appears real complete, lists my Intake, Block and Heads. My block and intake are 1971 402 original, but the engine was rebuilt with cast iron 1967 HP 396/427 heads.
