Correct 292 carb ID
I’ve got a 65 with a 292. Years ago I installed a parts store rebuild Rochester B that has worked fine, but is now time to be gone through. Before I put in the time and money I’d like to verify it is truly a correct 292 style. How do I identify a “real” one?
Thanks, Tom |
Re: Correct 292 carb ID
Here's the little that I know. There's a lot of variations on the Rochester B, if the carb still has the triangular identification tag, that's your best place to start. If it's missing, I can tell you 2 things, the pump plunger is a different style on the earlier Rochester B (the earlier style uses leather, the later is plastic) and the jet for a 292 is around .072 vs. roughly .058 for a 250. There's not much else to distinguish them other than manual vs. auto choke.

Re: Correct 292 carb ID
Thanks for the info guys. Makes sense that the jets would be larger for the big six. I thought I remembered reading that the bore size was also slightly larger for the 292 applications. Thanks for the link. Looks like he’s a wealth of information and a good parts source as well.
While I’m on the subject, anyone know if there’s a difference between intake manifolds? I know for a fact mine came off a ‘66 with a 250. Thanks Tom |
Re: Correct 292 carb ID
Look for a triangle shape tag screwed to top of the carb , many are missing but the original number to ID a 292 carb is 7024009 for 1964-1966

This is my NOS carb the seller stated for 292, I haven’t really looked into it for ID correctness.

Re: Correct 292 carb ID
I also noticed the ID number is stamped on the carb body also, well it’s actually raised numbers

Pimpston that is in fact a 292 carburetor with a 1967 number. Same just different date

Re: Correct 292 carb ID
awesome, thanks for the research... it makes sense now that you said that, cuz my 292 engine for my 66 burb i got from a 67 pickup.

Re: Correct 292 carb ID
292 had 3 bolts in the exhaust flange 250 only 2 until they came out with the head and exhaust manifold made together [ integrated head ] they had 3

Re: Correct 292 carb ID
Have been doing some more research. (Of course the tag is long gone, that would have been too easy). Also reached out to Mike’s as suggested above (haven’t heard back yet, but informative website).
Verified that it has the correct 1 3/4” throttle bore, so that’s a good sign (smaller sixes had 1 9/16”). Also found a five digit # stamped on the manifold mounting surface. Last two numbers kind of fuzzy, but looks like 27003. That would be for part #7027003. Unfortunately couldn’t find a listing anywhere for that number. After rereading 60-66’s above post though I’m wondering if maybe that fuzzy 3 is really a 9. Would make sense as the font they used has an upside down 6 for a 9. Anyway, maybe crisis solved! Thanks for all the input, Tom |
Re: Correct 292 carb ID
Hey 60-66,
I’ve just got a couple more questions for you before I move on from this and start obsessing over something completely different. Am I correct assuming the fourth digit 7 is the date code? On my carb, I’m assuming the stamped code 702700(?) ends in 9. The only other possibility is either 3 or maybe 8. Does your book list either of those, or is 9 the only possibility? Thanks for all the great information you share with me and all the others on this forum, Tom |

Generally speaking yes . You can see a pattern in the list of carburetors that in 1966 they started adopting the year into the carburetor number . Even in 1966 it wasn’t 100% . 1967 and up it became more common. The actual date code is explained in this picture. Now if you look at Pimstons carb tag 7027009 it’s a 67 carb number but has a M8 date for 1968 . This means it’s an over the counter service replacement made after production
I don’t see a 3 or 8 in the list so most likely a 9 |

Re: Correct 292 carb ID
I'm just curious but was there a 292 version of the monojet series carbs? Or was that only a thing with the B series?
