C10 Insurance Opt

Hi guys,

I have to insure my 1969 c10.

My current 21st Century insurance does not insure before 1980.

Wondering if you have any recommendations?

GEICO seems to have decent rates.

Thanks

My '71 GMC Jimmy K/1500 is insured thru Hagerty as a classic vehicle.
By using a Year Of Manufacture* license plate and the collector car insurance, I got a much lower rate [~$250/year] and the Jimmy is exempt from annual ADEQ emissions testing.
* It's a lemon yellow Arizona plate [1969 - '72] with a '71 year sticker.

I had Hagerty agreed value of $20,000 at $430 a year. Someone said look at Grundy so I did. They Quoted me Agreed value of $30,000 at $258 a year. Yep I have Grundy

Re: C10 Insurance Opt

I was surprised to find out that my insurance company offered a "classic" policy. I pay roughly $50 a year (liability only of course), but I can purchase additional coverage if I so choose. I am likely foolish by not adding enough to at least cover what I have invested, but there comes a point to where you eventually would break even with what you pay out. I know my wife suv is about $1,000 a year (has constantly gone up each year and it is not 4 years old), and it is sickening. Since my old truck is only driven a few hundred miles a year, and is on yom plates, I will likely take my chances on it, and save where I can.

I'm curious. Is C20/C30, etc. ins. different?

Some companies claim that a C20 or 30 is a heavier truck and will do more damage to another vehicle in an accident and charge you more for liability.

I don't own a vehicle valuable enough to carry more than liability on but when I insured my 71 GMC 3/4 ton the insurance agent told me that.

I've had Progressive on my car, truck and boat for years and do all my insurance on line. I've never met the person who is supposed to be my insurance agent.

I use State Farm, but Hagerty is a well respected company that insures classics reasonably.

Re: C10 Insurance Opt

Only thing I didn't like about Hagerty is they would not come off of the 5K a year mileage limitation. Grundy is not unlimited like the commercials use to say but they agreed to the mileage limits I wanted, and was a tad cheaper than Hagerty. I had some friends that could not get classic or collectors just because it was a commercial (3/4 ton & above) vehicle.

Re: C10 Insurance Opt

I have four classic vehicles with Hagerty
my newest 67 c10 resto-mod is valued at 100K with "cherished salvage coverage"
if it's ever a total loss...100K payout and keep the truck
I have 3 others as well

Your agent is the key to successful interaction with the insurance company
I have everything I own through a life long friend as my agent.
Any claim I have ever had is one phone call to him and it's good to go.

Grundy 72 C10 for $40k agreed value. Full coverage, no deductible. $116 a year added to my existing Grundy policy.

When I got Grundy for my collector cars several years ago I did the whole thing online, never spoke to anyone, sent in a few pics of each car. Insurance policy and cards were emailed a few weeks later

Have made 2 small claims over the years (windshield and fender), no hassle repair at any location I chose. $ sent to me electronically next day. I pay shop.

We have State Farm for daily drivers and hot rods. The hot rods are agreed value.

I have a Hagerty policy on my '71 Jimmy and have no mileage limits.

Hagerty here with a $40,000 agreed value on my Camaro SS, $12,000 on my IROC-Z, and $17,000 on my K20. It’s about $110 a month all of them with no deductible. The only one with any mileage limit is my SS because I chose it that way-it only sees a 1,000 or less miles a year normally.

I use American Modern Insurance Group
Saved me 30% over Hagerty.
Results may vary.
They can insure in all 50 states.

Their is a mileage limit, but I never get close to it and if I am don't use the miles they roll over to the next year.

.

Same here...35k agreed value, no deductible, full coverage. Had Hagerty for a long time and recently switched to Grundy for a huge savings. Was done mostly Online for setup and underwriting...called over phone to clarify a few things.

Thank you for all the responses

I ended up going with GEICO. They added the truck as an additional vehicle to my wife’s existing insurance plan for $77 per 6months (full coverage with towing plan)

As the truck is restored with additional value, I’ll step up the coverage in the future.

This was all prompted because I got a letter from the DMV threatening to suspend my registration if I didn’t show proof of insurance.

No such laws here in WA State.
The last three crashes I have had friends and relatives involved in were with others who didn't have insurance.

A gal drove off the road missing the front of my parked and restored truck, missing it by a foot. Crashed through the curb and got high-centered. Early morning, failure to negotiate a straight away. Dumbest car wreck I have ever seen.

This is puzzling to me too because I’ve been in incidents (one quite recently) with an uninsured motorist. Somehow they had registration. Not sure if this is a new thing or not.

Re: C10 Insurance Opt

Proof of insurance at the time it was registered doesn't guarantee they didn't let it lapse.
The required minimums for liability in CA haven't been updated in decades either, so un/under-insured motorist coverage is a necessity

Re: C10 Insurance Opt

You want an "agreed value" policy vs standard policy where the total loss value is whatever kelly blue book values the truck (read a 60's-70's truck is worth a few hundred $)

Collector Car insurance like Grundy, Haggerty, etc offer policies where the total loss value is what you state. With Grundy there is no milage restriction. You just need to show its not your DD and have another car.

Re: C10 Insurance Opt

NY the insurance companies notify DMV if you lapse or cancel coverage (liability ) for each day you have no insurance your fined if it goes past a certain time period your drivers license is suspended as is the registration . Now this only happens if you have plates on the vehicle and the registration is current . DMV gets notifications within 48 hours of a lapse . Big fine if you drive without insurance here .

Hard to compare insurance prices as the rates vary even with the state by zip code . I do know State Farm and Allstate offer agreed value on classic cars but you need an appraisal.

Re: C10 Insurance Opt

Right now, I just have liability on the truck, but would like to have comprehensive. Grundy looks great, but the requirement to keep it in the garage kills it for me.

I suspect the only problem I would encounter would be trying to get coverage if the truck was stolen from the house while parked in the driveway. Otherwise, I should have coverage for accidents.

72SB 05-20-2024 12:40 PM

Re: C10 Insurance Opt

Yes Grundy, Haggerty, etc, requires vehicle be garaged. Making a claim for theft from driveway would be a problem. Collecting on a claim of a total loss while driving would otherwise be covered....unless insurance proves the car was not garaged and voids the policy. The first thing any insurance company does when a claim is made is to see if their "terms of policy" have been met. Might want to have a pic of truck in garage...cough.

They don't want one to be daily driving a vehicle insured as a "collector" vehicle but some of us can rack up a lot of miles in a year just going to a couple of bucket list events that are half way or all the way across the country or doing a long "vacation" hitting several events on a big long route over a number of weekends with sight seeing in between. My wife's family lives in Central Texas (Waco/Blanco) and one of my bucket list events is in Austin. That trip alone will but 5 K on the truck. It's no uncommon here in Washington to drive 150 miles plus one way to a one day event and the guys in Texas and Oklahoma will tell you they do 150 in the early morning before a breakfast stop on the way to a show.
