Under bed gas tank with side feed?
 

All I am in the process of trying to find a gas tank to fit under my bed on my 55.1
GMC-100 with a Flat Out C4 suspension.

I want a side feeder and do not want to have to fill from the bed.

Open to all suggestions and Ideas!

It is slower filling that I expected. I also can't run a locking gas cap, at least not in the rain.

Side of the fender would be a straight shot into tank, but maybe look funny unless you did a gas door. But the door would have to be in a highly shaped section of the fender.

Or move it down and back on the fender, more towards taillight.

Or where it is but with a gas door and better vent. hmmm, maybe next winter

67i/72 Blazer/Surburban tanks are 13 inches tall 15 inches wide and 26 inches long and will fit behind the rear axle. 20 gallon tank.

You would probably have to mount the filler in the fender with that tank though,

Sending unit matching your gauges , how tall it is top to bottom and where the filler neck attaches are three things to consider along with width and length. There are some real easy to find tanks that don't cost a lot that just are too much trouble.

I've got a neat 20 gallon aluminum tank in my 48 now but it is bed fill and hangs down lower than I like and this time around the back end of the truck is coming down about three inches at least.

I've also got a 77 Blazer tank that a guy gave me when I bought a bunch of other stuff from him years ago. it is 25 gallon and is 28-3/4 x 28-1/8 x 10-3/4. It has an expansion hump on top that may take up more room than I want to give up though.

I've also got a 40 gallon Burb tank to put in my 71 if it will fit and the 71 may get the Blazer tank.

I had the same 70s blazer tank, it would have hung a lot lower than I wanted.

the filler takes up the space between floor and frame, then over half the height of the tank hangs below the frame.

I've been wondering about that part. It will probably end up in the 71 as the 40 gallon is pretty wide and won't fit between the rails. I've got two projects ahead of the 71 getting it's turn now that my shoulder is about 75% functional.

I've got a 74 F150 tank that came with a nine inch I bought that may be the tank of choice. For me gauge senders aren't an issue as I am not using GM gauges. Gauges of choice are secret squirrel stuff right now.

Way back when I first brought the 75 Blazer tank home I stuck it under my frame for a test fit. It does hang down but I am going to put a new crossmember at the rear of the frame like I did on my old frame and that would let me raise the top of the tank and the top of the lines and hoses up about even with where the top of this crossmember sits now.

custom build the tank of your dreams. have a welder do the actual welding if you're not up to the task. have the metal bent at a local sheet metal or fab shop. tack it together and then take it to your welder dude.install some baffles for anti slosh. put the fuel filler up as high as you can with a good vent line so as you fill air can escape easily. also install a ground wire from the tank to the filler neck and to the vehicle frame to take care of static when filling. you will get what you want and the cost still won't break the bank, likely. sometimes the local welding shop welcomes a one off project to break the monoteny of the everyday. sometimes a welder is simply doing side jobs for cash and has a buddy with a sheet metal break and shear.

The 79 ElCamino that I horse traded for for my son had a custom made 40 gallon tank, The bill for the tank was in the glove box and it ran 250 in 1985 dollars. Paper work in the glove box said that who ever had the truck at that time made regular runs between Tuscon and SoCal and I'd have to believe that they were running gas from Mexico as running across the border and filling up for about a third of what US prices were at he time was pretty common then. Thing is, with material and labor costs what they are that 250 buck tank would run between 5 and 6oo now.

I am not at home to measure mine for about a week. I don’t know how much room you’ve got between those frame rails.
I used this one in a big kit then I notched the Frame rail and heavily fish plated it outer rail.
Taking hose up and out through the side of the fender with one of those Gas, cap free fillers you just put the hose in and go, and a push pop open door. Installing a one-way valve in the fuel line to keep it from slashing back out since there’s not a lot of drop from fill to tank.
Ended up upgrading to Aeromotive in tank pump. Just didn’t like the looks of that one that came with the kit and didn’t want to remove it later.
I notched my frame rail, so the tank and all will drop straight out the bottom if I have to.

I don't see anyone bringing up exhaust routing, and will you have clearance between the rear axle and the tank. C4 rears don't have much upper clearance like a standard tube axle to dump at the bumper. That is the reason I picked the 18 gal, being it gives space to route each side over the axle and between the frame and the tank.
You could nascar it and dump before the wheels.

Ran mine as shown. Fills nicely with no burps. Used a stock 25 gallon k10. Having a 4" lift allowed filler and breather to easily be run over frame with only a small inner bed cut. Easily fills and takes locking cap just fine. Only 2 regrets. First was not assembling bed completely before tank install as reaching one row of bed bolts is going to be hard. Second the 25 gallon capacity is nice but at near $6/gallon very painful.

What does a tank need to be to be LS ready?

EFI/ High pressure/ pump inside tank?

When looking at these older variety tanks what should I keep in mind
for making the tank work in my favor?

This C4 issue of not to much room to dump the exhaust out the back end is a concern to me.

A tank with internal baffles around the pump or the pump inside a bucket
a pump that can maintain something like 55-60 PSI
fuel return line
vents, filler, fuel sender
Either a filter with pressure regulator or a fuel rail with built in regulator or a separate regulator
Easiest way to get all that is use a GM EFI tank.

If the tank has a standard GM fuel pump opening you could use a autoparts store pump and drop it in.
You can also buy pumps setup to fit into old school style sender openings: https://www.tanksinc.com/index.cfm/p...rod/prd227.htm So you could use an old tank or repop old tank but you might suffer slosh induced loss of pressure when the tank is near empty

Or coble up your own mount plate with vents, return etc.

There are external pumps sold to work, but they all have bad reputation of not lasting. Internal pump is the standard.

The pumps themselves are something that has suffered from import junk clogging the distribution system. The internals of the pump are nothing special, but with so much cheap stuff out there it is hard to find a good pump economically. I have not dropped the tank on my last swap to stick in the $200 genuine Walbro, so far it is running great on the $50 Acdelco brand pump designed for a pre LS era 2.2 that I put in a year or so before the swap. YMMV dropping full tanks to swap pumps is a pain.

I agree with the hassle have known some guys as well as myself that put a brand new one in got it all in place and it was defective. That can be very, very discouraging depending on how hard it is to get to the pump. My kit came with generic brand Chinese pump and I just couldn’t bring myself to put that thing in there even though I designed my tank to drop out the bottom. Can sure cost more, but i’ve been trying to buy as much USA as possible so I went to the Aeromotive in tank pump. Great reputation, they will talk with you through the installation, it’s what they do, so good at it.
