is a 305 v6 a rare motor?
 

i know they had these in the early 60s chevy trucks, but how rare are they? how much would a decent one be worth? are they real desirable?

stump pullin hell of a work truck motor.

personally i think its a boat anchor for my use, but they are a little on the rare side,dont see too many of them. desireable for a work/tow truck but daily driver...leaves a lot to be desired.
as for worth...depends on the buyer.

the V6's only came in GMC trucks from 60-70 (i think). they are not really rare in the sense that you are going to make a lot of money selling one. they are rare in that they arent as common as V8s or inlines. everyone i have heard from says they are great pulling torquey motors, that get dismal fuel mileage, and last practically forever. A lot of times they get swapped out cuz parts are harder to find than for SB chevies, and there isn't really that much general awareness of them. they are kinda like the rockwell transfer case and the eaton rearend...throwback pieces that are very durable and strong, but there isn't much knowledge about them floating around.

so what do you think a decent complete motor would be worth?

They looked like a big block version of a 4.3 ya know how the 4.3 is just a 350 minus two cylinders the 305 v6 i seen looked like a big block anyone know what the actual bore/ stroke on one is?

GMC made over 500,000 305V6 motors. I have one in my truck and like it. Price can range from free to $500 depeding on the condition. You can still get most of the parts at NAPA. I bought one with a trans that had 20,000 miles for $250. I have a spare with lots of miles sold for $150. Saw a beautiful completely rebuilt one go for $600 on eBay. Would be worth alot to some one who was restoring there truck to factory spec's ... Had one in a 65 gmc once can't day I liked it much..

I would say it looks more like a 409 or 348 with 2 holes cut off rather than a 4.3.

my granddads 65 had one and he once said that back in the day people would compare those and power wagons, like they powerstrokes and cummins today. he loved that engine and he worked it to death, the only thing though was that he was always going through brakes because he would pull more that he should.

now that I think about it, if the engine has a set of plaid valve covers, try and grab those. i believe they are worth some $$ to certain people. and no, that wasn't a typo. i don't remember why they made the special valve covers, but oh well.

I have a 63 GMC 4 wheele drive with the 305 and plaid valve covers I was told it was an experimental motor . If you changed the heads you could run diesel ie they hand stronger bottom end or something like that also these could be hooked end to end for a v-12 in heavy equipment

Out of thousands of 67-72 I have seen in junkyards I have only seen 1 305

Interesting, it could be a reaigenal thing, but I have seen about 5 or 6 in 67 - 72 trucks, and know where there are two right now.

I do not think the 305V6 was offered in Canada. I have a 68 GMC Canadian owners manual and it is not listed. It is listed in my US owners manual.

Since we're on the topic of the v6 motors, how many of you have owned or seen the 351 version? I currently have one in my 68 3/4 ton lwb... It's a daily driver, runs great, uses no oil other than the drips..:) The two things that I don't care for are the fuel consumption and the vibration...

i think the 351 was only available from '66-'68. it wasnt available in '69 according to my service manual.

Hmm, that might explains things. But still the majority of the boneyards I have been to are in the states inlcuding the one I saw the 305 in.

I got one in my '69 3500 GMC and I love it, it is about the closest you can come to a diesel in a gas engine................Runs the same empty or 3 times over loaded. I wish I had one in my '71 Chevy, I know for sure it would pull the Gooseneck alot better than a 350!

Any of you V-6 fanatics know of any K2500's with a 305 in it for sale? I think that is what my next project should be.

my 63 gmc has the 305 v6 there is some upgrades i'm thinking about do, such as a holley 2bbl 500 cfm, a even fire dist. from a early 80's buick 3.8L,and some dual exuast with glasspacks.

I just put the Holley 500 CFM on my V6 truck. This provides a very good improvement in performance. Well worth the $225 investment. I bent 5/16 steel brake line to connect the fuel pump to the carburator for a factory look. The fittings are the same on both ends.

I just picked up a 61 GMC with one of these in it. The truck was made in Oakland. This thing starts everytime, no problems. The spark plugs are on top of the motor. I think I might drive this thing to go visit Hotrodhenryj. Good post!
