Throttle Cable Got Longer

So, I unscrewed my gas pedal from the firewall to move it out of the way so I could get to the power door lock relay. When I put it back on, all of a sudden I had no throttle control. I disconnected the throttle cable from the carburetor, and it's now about 2 inches longer than it used to be. How can that happen? It's a pretty tough cable, the two crimps that are there are crimped on like crazy, the plastic bushing it goes through on the lever isn't broken, and it's still in position in its slot, and I never took any of that apart, I just moved it aside. Did my throttle cable spontaneously stretch? What the heck is going on?
