1984 K20 project
 

Picked this 84 up back in April was down in south west Washington close to Portland . Plan was to get it road worthy and inspected first off but like always these little projects seem to snowball. I had knee replacement surgery right after I got it home so wasn’t able to do much for a couple months.
First on the list was rebuilding the carb and finding a good donor bench seat. Then got rid of the wheels and found some period correct rims and new rubber . I found some mint factory hub caps so will run steeelies in the winter

Found a nice bench seat , wheels and bought new rubber . One of the gas tanks was leaking so I replaced the right side tank along with the solenoid valve, selector switch and sending unit . I’ll replace the left side tank this fall I’m sure it’s in bad shape as well .

New tank , I raptor lined the bottom and used por 15 the top . I left the plastic guard off the tank which accumulates to much road debris and crap. The right side inner fender had rotten out under the battery tray . Battery must of been leaking so it rotted out the inner fender along with the rad support on that right side . I found a perfect rad support at the junk yard but mine was in such good shape except for that one area so I opted to make a patch instead and repair it .

Finished up the patch and while I was in there noticed my exhaust manifold was cracked . I knew I had an exhaust leak but first thought it was the donut gasket at down pipe connection . Anyways found a set of manifolds and replaced the one side . Put new brake hoses, rad and heater hoses as well . The mechanical part is pretty much done and ready for inspection . Have to bend up a new fuel line to the carb yet and replace my back reverse light harness and a few other wires at back of engine bay . Guy must of had a small fire when he had carb issues as a few wires are burnt up back there . i tried fitting the newer style tailgate band on the older incorrect tailgate but it didnt fit well so I found the correct tailgate. I'll color match the tailgate and get it on soon. Also found a nice factory step style bumper. I didnt care for the one that was on there and it was tweaked abit

So like most projects one thing leads to another and always seem to snowball lol. I found this nice dash pad on marketplace and grabbed it then I was like well I have to paint it then my door panels are so faded and will look like crap so I'll need to paint them and then headliner, window seals , vent window seals. Well the dash has holes in it for guys mounting crap to it so gotta weld up holes in dash and other holes in back of cab from mounting speakers etc. So stripped interior out and welded up holes and painted door jams and rockers since I was already doing the dash . A couple orders to USA1 and classic chev and I’m doing it all lol.. Got a patch from junkyard for stereo opening as i wanted a factory type deck as well

I'll say it was well worth the drive! Hard to find a virtually rust free straight square body truck up here! Needed some luv like most but runs strong drives straight

Used SEM shadow blue for paint on all the interior plastic . Color is a good match .

New gauge cluster back section, lens and lights . Installed sound deadner, have to finish up the carpet then install amp and speakers

I ordered it from USA1 . It didn’t come in a box or have any markings on it . I don’t think there are many manufacturers for carpet maybe ACC ? I left it out in the sun for a couple hours and it fit perfect

Finished up the carpet and installed a small amp and some hertz 6x9s and some 2.5” speakers in dash . Carpet fit really well and turned out good.

Tackled the seat next . The original foam was in really good shape but I ordered new bottom foam just to be on safe side . Cleaned up frames and a quick paint job then added some extra wire cross stringers across bottom of seat springs . Ive done this on all the seats I’ve done and it really helps for firmness

Tried to get a blue seat cover from USA1 but nothing available until Oct so I ordered this brothers truck one through summit . Was here in within 2 weeks. Bottom piece fits really good but the back piece has a lot of extra material like 2 inches extra length on the back side. Going to try calling Holley or brothers to see what they say about this. Most covers I’ve done it’s the other way around usually they are tight to fit up . I can roll the extra material up and hog ring it but it’s not right from what I can tell

Seats look really good.! I've got seat covers for mine here going to tackle it soon (dark blue acme auto madrid vinyl from rock auto).

Thx! This cover is made by acme as well according to the guy I talked to at Brothers yesterday. Its a decent cover for the price and shipped quick compared to others.

I would have waited on USA1 seat cover, those ACME covers are poorly made. I quit using them years ago. USA1 colors match way better also, as with their dye. I noticed you used SEM, which is a good brand, but it’s hard to find a perfect match to our trucks original interior colors. That’s where USA1 comes in with all their stuff, even the dyes match perfectly.
I really liked that you did take the time on your seat frame. This is how I did all the seats I restored, when I was doing them. I don’t anymore, but I do still restore the seatbelts, if you want yours done while they are out.
I know ACC is the main supplier for all the carpet, but who did you order it from? I have a buddy looking to order the blue high hump. He’s being told it’s all out of stock.
I think I’m going to start over at the beginning of your thread with everything you have done. I really enjoy looking at all the before and after pics!

Thanks! Yeah i didnt want to wait that long on a seat cover. USA1 told me Octoberish for a cover which probably means November or December the way they operate. I got this other one in July, it will do the job I like the material and it looks like some of the factory covers of same years. If i was doing a full on OEM resto i would of ordered one from SMS.
Carpet is from USA1 not sure who supplies them ? ACC or PUI ?
The SEM paint looks to be a good match its close enough for me this its just a driver

All the covers I have ordered from them have never taken that long, especially the blue. Now back in 2019-2020, the 77-79 blue took awhile, almost a year. But that was a supplier issue because of the lockdowns.

Vent window seals, new door glass and all other door seals next. Found a tire jack and brackets on marketplace other day as well along with 5 steelie rims. The jack and hardware are getting hard to find these days

Finished up painting and installing new seals on the vent windows . Installed new door glass and assembled the door panels and got them on .
