Question regarding vin and model numbers
 
OK, so my son and I bought a beat up old 69 C10. He has since decided he does not want to work with it anymore so I am taking it over. Before he quit we redid the wiring, exhaust and some interior stuff. He ripped the bed wood out and that is where is stands. I want to replace the cross sills and just put a piece of plywood for the bed right now. As I have looked more into it, seems the old owner moved one of the cross sills down and redrilled a hole for one of the others. Now, my question. In looking at the VIN and Model, I am wondering if it was a fleetside to start with and someone decided to change it to a stepside. Here are the numbers I found.

Drivers side Pillar: CE149Z897007

Inside the glove box: C#141z606130 and CE10934

I have looked around and I cannot seem to match the numbers exactly, but I have a sneaking suspicion this was a fleetside that somebody turned into a step side. If that is the case, is it possible to keep it as a stepside? I like the look of them better anyway.

Any input is welcomed and appreciated.

Does the SPID sticker on the inside of the glove box door list the original wheel base, to see if anything has been changed there. Original short bed would be 115" and long bed would be 127"

Is the truck titled in your name at this time? If not I don't think I would do any more to it until I got it registered in your name. It looks like someone possibly used a couple of trucks to make one.

There should also be a number stamped on top of the frame rail by the steering box. Check it out. You may need to wire brush the area to see it.

Thank you, yes the truck is in my name. It was going to be a father/son project much like the 56 my dad and I worked on that I still have. I really like the truck and want to work it out and restore it. It is a real diamond in the rough though and I am not sure I have the ability to do it. Do any of the numbers I posted tell you anything about whether it is a stepside or fleetside? I will look at the glove box sticker again and post what it says. There are some "options" listed, Heavy duty rear springs, amp oil temp gauges, chrome bumper and blue vinyl trim.

As a side note, it appears the VIN on the title matches the VIN plate on the inside drivers side door. The glove box VIN however does not match, so maybe the glove box door is different? As I am reading it so far, I have a 1969 1/2 ton pickup made in Fremont. That is based on the VIN on the inside of the door. I have to get in and see if I can find the number that is stamped on the frame, but that will be for a later date. Right now, I have to repair the wiring a jacked up when I tried to take the bed off. LOL.

I am not that familiar with decoding them. Here is a chart for doing that.

You should be able to see the frame number just by opening the hood and using a flashlight to see it.

You might also check the rivets that attach your VIN plate to the door jamb and make sure they are the Rosette rivets instead of the round ones.

The model code CE10934 decodes to a long wheel base fleet side bed.

You need whatever model code is associated with VIN CE149Z897007 (assuming that's the VIN for this truck).

Fleetside and stepside beds use the same attaching points, so if that's what got you wondering you can disregard that.

Thank you for posting that. My glove box door number is slightly different missing a 9 and all the numbers after the 4. But, the 34 tells me this might have been a fleetside in it's previous life. If that is the case, I am wondering how tough it would be to change it to a stepside and do it correctly.

1. Undo box bolts and tail lamp harness
2. Remove fleetside box
3. Set stepside box in place
4. Tighten box bolts and reconnect harness.

If the numbers on the frame match the door post numbers, the glove box door has been changed. If the frame numbers match the glove box door, the cab or its VIN tag has been changed.. More than likely, you have a truck that was built using parts from other trucks...

Got it. Thanks. I am going to go out on a limb and say the cab and frame should match. The glove box on the other hand is probably changed. I have to ask my son if he changed it, but I don't remember him saying he did. Either way, I really dig the truck and will be eventually tearing into it and doing a possible frame off resto. I have always wanted to do that. LOL.
