'01 6.0 erratic starting
All of a sudden my engine won't start instantly like before. The first start of the day is normal but it seems that after warm-up it takes some cranking and I have to depress the accelerator to get it to catch. I conferred with Mr Google and one recommendation was to change the fuel filter, which I did. Anybody got any ideas?
I appreciate any and all suggestions. Thanks and regards, Buddy P.S. This is my first fuel injection rodeo so type slowly please. |
Re: '01 6.0 erratic starting
Mr. Google is thinking low fuel pressure, and so am I.. Have you checked fuel pressure?? Is it as specified for your vehicle?? Your Factory Service Manual covers this procedure..

Re: '01 6.0 erratic starting
Cam sensor failure can also cause this. It's all speculation unless you have scanned it for codes.

Re: '01 6.0 erratic starting
Oreilly''s "loans" a fuel pressure tool to check the fuel pressure at the fuel rail.

Re: '01 6.0 erratic starting
First, sorry for the duplicate postings. My original post didn't show up until just now.
I haven't checked anything other than to borrow Autozone's OBD scanner which didn't indicate much except random misfire, low voltage to an O2 sensor and coolant overtemp. I'll borrow the suggested fuel pressure monitor. Thanks. |

It would be a great gesture to go over there and delete that duplicate post.. It sure would aid in the prevention of confusion... |
Re: '01 6.0 erratic starting
Is this in a silverado or is it a swap? How many miles are on it? Common for the fuel pressure regulator on the rail to fail and cause a long crank .

Re: '01 6.0 erratic starting
Just checked the fuel pressure...it holds pretty steady at 46psi. Guess I should check the regulator as it seems to be an easy task. Is it cleanable or rebuildable? Not looking forward to replacing the pump.
More thanks. |
Re: '01 6.0 erratic starting
Should be at 58 psi. I'm not aware of any stock FFR that is rebuildable.

Re: '01 6.0 erratic starting
I would definitely test and or replace that regulator seeing as your 12psi low at idle. Odds are the pump is fine.

Re: '01 6.0 erratic starting
I finally had a little time so I hooked the pressure gauge back up and removed the vacuum line from the regulator. Gas dripped out of the line so I think this means something, right? Anyhow I was getting a pressure reading around 58. I think that confirms that the regulator is kaput. Time to go shopping.
